Bee Keeping Frequently Asked Questions There are many questions that bee keeping services can raise. In order to answer those frequently asked questions the following Q&A will hopefully provide answers and act as a reference for you throughout the contract term. If you have any questions not covered, then please feel free to contact us, where we will be pleased to assist. Will our employees get stung? People are far more likely to get stung by a wasp. The hives are always placed with safety in mind and we don’t experience problems when we site hives, quite the opposite, people usually want to get involved. Is any site suitable for honey bees? Most sites are but a thorough survey will confirm if the desired locations are suitable, we have placed them everywhere from lakesides to rooftops. When can I have my bees installed? This usually happens in May at the earliest, depending on UK sourced supply and can be done through to September How long will the bees last will I need to buy some more? The colony is managed as on-going livestock with queen replacements so it’s only the occasional loss due to predation or winter that will need to be replaced When will I get honey from the bees, will it be in the first year? Not usually, the bees normally need the first year to build up to full size What do honey bees do in the Winter? They cluster together in a tight ball to stay warm and eat honey. Not a bad way to spend the winter months! How much honey will we get? This is very dependent on the weather and in some years the bees don’t produce any surplus. We manage the hives to give the best possible chance of surplus and our customers typically get 20 – 30 jars per hive in normal years.
Are there enough flowers on our site to support the bees? Bees will fly out up to 3 miles to find good forage and our initial site survey will assess both your site and the wider area. What about pests and diseases? Integritas manage the current UK pest and diseases in line with best practice and now have a special legal status to self-manage the nasty legally modifiable diseases.
