  3. History • Was populated by people from Britain, Western and astern Europe and East and Southeast Asia • 1st peoples were Metis, Saulteaux. Assiniboine, Chippewa, and Ojibwa. • Joined Confederation in 1870 • Louis Riel is called the father of Manitoba

  4. “The Emerald of the Prairies”Winnipeg • The Emerald (Winnipeg) is the capitol of Manitoba • The oldest city in the Prairie Provinces • Has the Golden Boy (a statue that holds a torch in his right hand and wheat in the other) • The first peoples in Winnipeg were the Saulteaux • Winnipeg was a meeting place for Native Tribes GOLDEN BOY

  5. Fast Facts • Fifth smallest province in Canada • The flower of Manitoba is the Prairie Crocus • There are about 1,000,000 Canadians living in Manitoba - half of them live in Winnipeg Prairie Crocus
