Welcome to “WiSE”(Workshops in Speaking English) Tonight: Thanksgiving traditions Led by Brea Barthel
A quick note on Election Day • Yesterday was Election Day • This was an “off-year” election (no national or state-wide elections) • Elections were at • City or town level • Ward level (sub-section of a city or town) • County level (region with a number of towns/cities)
Thanksgiving!! • By federal law, the holiday is the fourth Thursday of November • It was “started” in 1621 by “Pilgrims” in Massachusetts to celebrate a good harvest • But giving thanks for a good harvest existed before Europeans came to the area! • Some Native American tribes consider Thanksgiving a national day of mourning • For most other Americans, it’s a favorite holiday.
What makes it a great holiday? • No worry about gift buying • Almost everybody has Thursday & Friday off • Most people gather with family or friends • TV has special events: parades, football games, classic movies • Good food! • (See separate handout)
Ideas for group discussion • Do you have a holiday at harvest time? • What is a holiday meal like? • What are common holiday activities?
