A Look Back at the Production of the U.S. Drought Monitor from January 30, 2007 Summary of indicators and commentary from authoring the Drought Monitor for the week of January 30, 2007 Brian Fuchs, National Drought Mitigation Center U.S. Drought Monitor Forum October 10-11, 2007 Portland, Oregon

Comments from E-mail • I don't care how much water you think you've stored in your reservoirs, because when the snowpack at the end of January is less than 50% state-wide, and your streams are dry, and you have a summertime-like high pressure system parked on top of you---you should start calling a drought early, so you can plan for the worst and hope for the best.
Comments from E-mail • The impacts matter more than the numbers (indicators) • Yes, as we said before, the numbers are whatever they are. Impacts Logged in the DIR*note* Only 5 drought related impacts during the same period in 2006
The Final Drought Monitor Map • Were there mistakes in the Evidence? • Were mistakes made with Local Input? • Were mistakes made in the Process?
Where do we go from here? • Various users have been upset at one time or another with the results of the Drought Monitor • How to weigh conflicting Evidence? • Local Feedback is vital to improving the Drought Monitor as well as the Process
