  2. What is the Alabama Reading Initiative? • a statewide K-12 program • The goal of the ARI is to significantly improve reading instruction and ultimately achieve 100% literacy among public school students. • Offers training for teachers helps them teach reading in proven and effective ways.

  3. Characteristics of Skillful Readers according to ARI • Skillful readers demonstrate • Accuracy • Fluency • Active building of meaning • Self-regulation

  4. Three Targets • Strengthen reading instruction in the early grades • Expand students comprehension levels • Intervene with struggling readers

  5. Eight Modules for Teacher Training • Language development and vocabulary • Phonemic awareness and phonics • Concepts of print • Comprehension strategies • Reading/writing connection • Formal assessment • Informal assessment • Effective intervention

  6. What is MMGW:Making Middle Grades Work? • 1. Read the equivalent of 25 books per year across the curriculum. • 2. Write weekly in all classes. • 3. Use reading and writing strategies to enhance learning in all classes. • 4. Write research papers in all classes.

  22. Write a 4-6 sentence paragraph identifying the rising action, climax, and resolution in the story. Why do you think the author wrote this book? Write a 4-6 sentence paragraph explaining what you think the author’s main purpose for the story is. Pretend you are a real estate agent. Create a brochure that describes the location where the story takes place, in a way that would convince people to move there. Create a new character for the story. Describe what the character is like. Write at least three ways the story would be different if that character were in the story. Create a project idea of your own. Check with your teacher before starting. Choose two characters from the story and one choice that each of them made. Write a paragraph or create a diagram to demonstrate the differences in how the two characters make decisions. Write a script for a scene in the story that you consider to be the most important part. With a partner, use your script to act out the scene (2-4 minutes). After you’ve finished reading the book, predict what will happen in the future for five of the characters. Name five characters and write one or two things that you think will happen in the future for each one. Write a letter from the point of view of one character, explaining the conflict in the story. Write the letter to an imaginary pen pal, someone who wouldn’t know the other characters or the situation. THINK- TAC- TOE
