ARI Informational Meeting What is the ARI? • Agricultural Research Initiative • Funded by the state of California • Four ARI campuses: • College of Agriculture: • Chico State, Fresno State, SLO, Cal Poly Pomona • Administration: • ARI Board of Directors / Presidents • Fresno State / Executive Director: Joe Bezerra • Deans / Campus Coordinators • Allocation from CSU Budget
ARI Informational Meeting The ARI is a granting program • Funds research activities that improve the economic efficiency, productivity, profitability and sustainability of California agriculture and its allied industries. • Campus submissions • $75,000 yearly limit • Multi-year grants (up to 3 yrs) • Requires cash match (80% of direct) • No pre-proposal required • Systemwide submissions • $150,000 yearly limit ($75,000 minimum) • Multi-year grants (up to 3 yrs) • Requires cash match (100% of total) • Requires pre-proposal and invitation for full proposal
ARI Informational Meeting ARI requires a cash match • Sources of cash match: • Industry, Federal or State (non-general fund) • Match within 6 months of pending grant’s fiscal year • Funds deposited in a Cal Poly Foundation account • Funds deposited in collaborator’s account if directly related to this project. • Requires verification and a signed form. • Form found on ARI website • In-kind match is not counted in Campus submissions
ARI Informational Meeting A well-written proposal is required • Request for proposals occur each fall (September) • Due in January • Matching funds verified by October • Same quality and effort as a federal proposal • Research suitable to the NSF or NIH is not likely to be suitable to the ARI • Research suitable to the USDA is likely to be suitable to the ARI. • A clear agricultural component must be indicated • Model systems are not likely to be funded • Each proposal is reviewed by a peer committee or off-campus reviewers
ARI Informational Meeting Types of Funding Available • Competitive Research Grants • Max $75,000 / year for three years • Seed Grants • Max $5,000 - $10,000 • Capacity Building • Equipment / matching programs • Meetings / Symposiums
ARI Informational Meeting Proposal Review • Reviewers are ARI Committee members or off-campus • Clear agricultural component / impact • Scientific merit • Cash match • System-wide requires collaboration w/ other ARI / CSU / UC researcher • Grantsmanship is important
ARI Informational Meeting Post-award Expectations / Requirements • Interim / Annual / Final Reports • Participation in Annual Research Showcaseheld each fall. • Peer-reviewed articles are expected • Acknowledgement of ARI funding in articleis expected • Dissemination of results to shareholders • Non-compliance with the above will preclude further participation in the ARI program
