  1. Botany-the scientific study of plant life(and a great opportunity to practice descriptive writing skills) With Lewis and Clark

  2. No matter where explorers go, there usually are signs of life. For example, cactus is found in the desert, and palm trees are in the tropics. The environment plays an important role in the species that are found in a particular region. Those plants have adapted to the conditions it faces. Lewis and Clark carefully recorded what they saw along the trail.

  3. “I met with a singular plant today in bloom which I preserved a specimen; it grows on the steep side of fertile hills near this place.” -Merriweather Lewis June 1, 1804

  4. Botany was just one of the many things Lewis and Clark were sent to learn about while on the Corps of Discovery. However, because of their detailed journals, many previously unseen species of plants were introduced to Americans.

  5. Let’s try it You will need - • 3 baggies • 3 index cards • Your RRN • Pen or pencil

  6. Make a Botany Baggie Book Step 1- • Go outside and collect 3 interesting plant specimens from the school grounds. You will have 7 minutes. • Place them gently in-between pages of your RRN to preserve them. • In your RRN, jot down elements of the environment in which you found them. ( fertile dirt, sand, in the shade,….)

Step 2 • Upon returning to the classroom, spread out and observe your findings. • For our lesson purposes, we will pretend no one has ever seen these plants before. • In your RRN, practice writing descriptions of what you found and where you found it. Use specific and vivid adjectives. Remember, no one else has ever seen this specimen. If they go out looking for it, they should be able to find it based on your description and information. • Give the plant a creative name.

  8. Step 3 • Be sure to revise your work and get it checked by peers, Mrs. Cox, and Mrs. Kroll. • On the lined side of the index card, draw a colored sketch of your specimen. Now neatly write a detailed description. • On the other side, mount your specimen to the card using glue.

  9. Step 4 • Place each card inside of a baggie. • Create a cover for your bag complete with a title and your name. • Staple the cover and baggies together. • You will place these in your specimen box.

The plan…During class time we will- • Day one- discuss project/ get specimens/begin prewriting/press specimens over night • Day two- revise and edit descriptions/work on cover • Day three- compose final entries and put botany baggie book together. • Books are due on or before Friday at the beginning of class.
