9. Language and Etiquette Non-judgmental, emotionally neutral words - accurate descriptors
Terms to avoid include: -
victim, suffers from, crippled, afflicted with, handicapped (hand in cap), invalid (in valid), wheelchair bound, normal.
It is better to say: -
person with a disability, wheelchair user, use the recognised medical term e.g. multiple sclerosis, spina bifida etc.
10. Things to do – good practice suggestions Create an inclusive, welcoming environment
Staff Awareness i.e. all staff
Attitudes, use of language
Review Policies, procedures & Practices: entrance requirements, information, teaching methods, delivery of teaching, assessment, examinations etc.
Anticipate possible needs/adjustments
Consult on policies, practices, procedures
Seek advice – person with disability is expert!
Avoid making assumptions
Communication is key!
