    4. Disability Services - Aims Embed disability issues into the culture of the University, thereby influencing strategic development. Improve the specific services to students and prospective students with disabilities. Ensure that students with disabilities studying at the university are provided with appropriate support during the academic year.

    7. Defining Disability – Students with Disabilities Legal definition contained in DDA 1995 “Someone who has a physical or mental impairment which has a substantial and long term adverse effect on his/her ability to carry out normal day to day activities”

Language and Etiquette Non-judgmental, emotionally neutral words - accurate descriptors Terms to avoid include: - victim, suffers from, crippled, afflicted with, handicapped (hand in cap), invalid (in valid), wheelchair bound, normal. It is better to say: - person with a disability, wheelchair user, use the recognised medical term e.g. multiple sclerosis, spina bifida etc.

Things to do – good practice suggestions Create an inclusive, welcoming environment Staff Awareness i.e. all staff Attitudes, use of language Review Policies, procedures & Practices: entrance requirements, information, teaching methods, delivery of teaching, assessment, examinations etc. Anticipate possible needs/adjustments Consult on policies, practices, procedures Seek advice – person with disability is expert! Avoid making assumptions Communication is key!
