CENTRAL AGMARK LABORATORY,NAGPUR The Central Agmark Laboratory (CAL) at Nagpur is the apex and appellate laboratory of the Dirctorate of Marketing and Inspection (DMI) established in 1957 under the Ministry of Rural Areas and Employment,Govt. of India.
The main function of the Laboratory are:- 1. Standardization of quality parameters for new agricultural, horticultural, meat food products. 2. Revising/reviewing the existing quality standards under Agmark. 3. To evolve/standardize methods of analysis/tests under quality assurance system of agricultural and allied products. 4. To develop new methods of analysis or to identify new adulterant in field of agricultural commodities. 5. To undertake collaborative research activities. 6. To advice and comment on all technical matters. 7. Training on analysis of food and agricultural commodities and extension work.
The main function of the Laboratory are:- 8. To supervise the technical functioning of the Regional Agmark Laboratories and to render technical advice to the State Grading Laboratories. 9. Analysis of routine samples and controlled samples

Functions of Divisions under CAL,Nagpur It was decided in 1959-60 to set up specialized divisions on commodity basis to bring in more efficiency and compactness in the working of CAL. These are – 1. Foodgrains Division (Headed by Deputy Director) This Division deals with research and standardization work related to foodgrains and allied products. Also, this deals with formulation / revision of Agmark grade specification of Commodities. 2. Livestock Products Division (Headed by Dy. Director) This division is undertaking the work related to the formulation of grade standards for meat food product and the revision of existing standards.
Functions of Divisions under CAL,Nagpur 3. Oils and Fats Divisions (Headed by Asst. Director) This div. Deals with technical / scientific matter pertaining to various oils & fats which includes formulation of specification for new commodities, revision of existing commodities for detecting adulteration of vegetable oils & fats. 4. Spices and Essentials Oils Divisions (Headed by Asstt. Director) This division deals with formulation / revision of specification of spices and essential oils and also carries out research work connected with the quality control of these commodities. 5. General Chemistry Division (Headed by Asstt. Director) This Div. Undertake the work of formulation / revision of specification of Commodities.
Functions of Divisions under CAL,Nagpur 6. Toxicology Division (Headed by Asstt. Director) Toxicology division deals with study on toxic contaminants such as pesticide reside, aflatoxin etc., in Agricultural and food commodities. An attempt was made to study the presence of pesticide residue in milk, eggs, aflatoxin M1 in Khoa in Market sample of Nagpur. 7. Packaging Division (Headed by Asstt. Director) Packaging division deals with study on packaging material for its suitability for food contact application, and also with shelf life of agricultural and allied products in various packaging materials, storage study on desiccated coconut was undertaken.

Planning Section the Division of Planning deals mainly with the following activities: - receipt and issue of samples for analysis - Technical examination of proposals from all the Regional Agmark Laboratories - Financial sanction issued for the purchase of chemicals, apparatus, equipment, dead stock items, repairs and Miscellaneous items. 9. Sections for General Administration (Library / Stores section / Hindi section ) Maintaining the service related works, Library section, store section and Hindi section.
Major Activities of Divisionsof CAL :- • Formulation of Agmark Specification. • Revision of Agmark Grade Specification. • Research Project. • Research Paper. • Duplicate sample Analysis. • Training to Chemists. • Technical advice,inspection at RAL. • Compilation of various reports.
Major Activities of Divisions of CAL :- • The allotment of project is done in the beginning of the financial year and the project is to be normally completed in one year i.e. by end of March. • The project / research work allotted by the Head of the division to all Regional Laboratory is based on availability of staff and the infrastructure at a RAL. • The data analyzed from RAL and field formations is used to formulate a specification and is sent by the Director to Agricultural Marketing Adviser ( AMA ) for issue of notification in Gazette.
The Central Agmark Laboratory is assisted by a Network of twenty three Regional Agmark Laboratories (RALs) spread through out India, which are also engaged in quality Controlof agricultural and allied products and generating data on India basis. THE FUNCTIONS OF RALs The Regional Agmark Laboratories form the backbone of the main quality control activities of the DMI. They provide effective checks for the purity and quality of Agmark products. • To carry out analysis of duplicate and check samples. • To conduct work in the field of formulation of standards of new commodities and also revision/review of standards (Started from 1992). • To collaborate other activities with regard to standardization of method, development of method of analysis, (started from 1992).To impart training to the Chemists.

Key Objectives of e-Governance : • To make suitable recommendation for overcoming the gradation of Commodity. • To familiarize with the methodology of Computerisation in Analytical data analysis of Commodity. • To make the system Web enabled for sharing Regional Agmark Laboratory analytical data collection. • To linkup management skills with new Information Technology. • To expertise / expedite the analysis of commodity. • To maintain account of analytical statistical data. • To make available information / data of Grade & Specification of commodity on Commercial Basis. • To develop a Centralized system for generating reports of various commodities of acquisition / possession.
SCOPE • To make available analytical data of sample commodity report on Web. • The observation / analytical data analysis through computer application for generate graphs / maps. • To collect relevant information of commodities / samples of various regions and make available to Govt. and non-Government organizations. • Standardisation of analytical ( commodity wise, parameter wise ) report format of day-to-day data analysis work. • Data transmission through e-mail / web based application to Central Agmark Laboratory fro Regional Agmark Laboratories of various States.
SCOPE • To develop new method of analysis or to identify new adulterant in the field of food and agriculture commodities. • To evolve / standardization methods of analysis / test under quality assurance system of agriculture and food products. • To adopt computerized method for analysis / test data of commodity. • To display analytical result of commodity and make available data were statistically analysed and the statement showing frequency distribution of different quality factor in different ranges and their percentage share in total.
SCOPE • To automate and standardise the grades for five years for the existing agmark commodities so that • For the given specifications computer will give the result. • Standardised Agmark commodities make available on the web.
SYSTEM PERSPECTIVE: • The system will comprise the Central Agmark aboratory and Twenty Two Regional Agmark Laborataries. • The proposed system will offer the following functions: • Database maintenance • on-line generation • report generation • office automation • analytical data analysis • data transmission • registration of commodities for formulation of Agmark • Specification of Grade standards. • Make available forms for registration and analytical data of • Formulation of agmark specification of Grade standard • Data normalization. Transaction and exceptions.
General Requirements: This section enumerates the requirements, other than the specific functional requirements for the functioning of proposed system. It also cater to issue related to security, external interfaces and backup modes. External Interface Requirement: 1. User Interface: The system will have a Graphical User Interface (GUI) with an online facility. All fields on the screen will have intuitive labels and list of valid values will be displayed wherever possible.
General Requirements: 2 Hardware Interface: The proposed system will involve a number of computers connected in a Local Area Network (LAN) at each of the locations to access data from the server. The LANs in individuals Divisions Laboratories will be connected and the Desktops at Regional Agmark Laboratories of various state will be connected to CAL through leased lines (Dialup through telephone). General Requirements: 3 Software Interface: The proposed solution needs to be integrated with other Loboratories across the States. The Web enable data transmission, the registration of specification / gradation of Commodities, display information on Web.
