The conversion kit is available from Clarks Corvair Parts and comes with instructions. The photos on the following slides are intended to supplement the instructions. Photos courtesy of Rick Norris.
You can use a shift lever from a manual transmission Corvair.
You will need to extent the wiring for the backup & neutral safety lockout switch from the instrument panel to the new shifter location on the floor. Make a “pig tail” to do it.
Connecting the pig tail to the existing connector under the dash.
Getting ready to install the shift mechanism. All Corvairs have a hole in the floor for a manual shifter – even those equipped with Powerglide transmissions.
Looking down at the floor from inside the interior of the car.
Looking up at the underside of the car, with belly pan removed.
Originally Powerglide shift cable gets looped to tie-in with the shifter at the new location – on the floor.
Another view from the underside. Here, the pig-tail wiring extension can be clearly seen.
‘Looks just like a manual shifter. But there’s no clutch pedal in sight!
This Corvair is also equipped with a floor-mounted parking brake. Editor asks: Can we make do with the factory parking brake handle under the dash?
View from side, underneath the car. Note that the mechanism extends slightly below the belly-pan. The pan needs to be modified to accommodate it.
Top-side of the belly pan, showing the “box” (recess panel) installed.
Belly pan re-installed with box / recess panel for shift mechanism clearance.
Shift lever boots using stock Corvair partsThe stock rubber Monza boot may be used and will cover the mechanism. The stock Corsa shift boot/box can be used, but must be modified and a new rubber cover installed. Mounting clips must also be fabricated. The picture illustrates how to modify the box. A white paper cover is installed in place of the rubber piece and the metal cut is unpainted.
