  2. 2003 2004 • Coordinator hired • Add to members list • Discuss diversifying- to what extent • Raise money to become sustainable • Create organizational documents • Organizational Documents Completed • Centered around democracy • Members steer direction • Self governing • Seeks to protect prairie dogs regardless of boundaries- • Member values- respect each other, agree to disagree but treat each other w/ compassion • Pay member dues and contribute to work load

  3. MISSION STATEMENT The Prairie Dog Coalition is dedicated to the protection of prairie dogs and restoration of prairie dog ecosystems. The Coalition accomplishes its mission by facilitating the efforts of Coalition members and providing information to the media and to the general public.

  4. 2005 2006 • Membership continues to grow • Additional funding secured • Held our first annual fundraiser • Full time organization • Annual meeting & strategic planning- identified gaps & took action • Not going to focus on individual colonies • Media & Messaging workshop for members • Secured our own 501C3 status • Coordinator  Director • Secured our own 501C3 status

  5. 2006 Accomplishments • Hosted and funded a professional, three day media and messaging workshop for 34 prairie dog and Great Plains advocates; • Increased allotted acreage on the Pawnee National Grasslands from 1,000 to 8,500; • Facilitated and funded a two state prairie dog poll • Implemented non-lethal prairie dog management techniques • Created PrairieDog101.org for the public • Launched a successful citizen campaign to protect almost 1,000 acres of black-tailed prairie dogs on the Pawnee National Grasslands; • Produced and distributed over 500 reports on Prairie Dogs, People and Plague in partnership with the Colorado Department of Health and the Environment; • Flagstaff relocation training • Raised money and organized support to leverage Coalition member’s campaigns to Keep Poisons Off Our Prairies; and • Nearly doubled our gross income in twelve months!

Lobbying for Conata Basin & meet w/ HSUS VP & PDC Board of directors to discuss merge • Annual meeting w/ HSUS • Mission Statement: For the benefit of treasured wildlife, the Prairie Dog Coalition is dedicated to the protection of imperiled prairie dogs and restoration of their ecosystems. To accomplish this mission, we provide information and advocacy training, facilitate communication and planning, and promote conservation projects. We are an alliance of non-profit organizations concerned citizens, and scientists dedicated to the protection of prairie dogs and restoration of prairie dog ecosystems. Survival of the prairie dog is critical to the continued existence of the prairie ecosystem—one of the most endangered ecosystems in the world. • Working to create model local plans for citizen response • Provide info & resources to public • Conata Basin is now a major focus • Prairie Dog Day at Denver Zoo commences • Keep Poisons Off Our Prairies becomes our campaign slogans • D.C- advocate for pdogs on federal level-work with House of Reps. To get help to stop proposed poisoning in CB • Natural Resources Committee- Public lands committee Senator Grihalva writes to USFWS & FS a/b Conata Basin asking them to not allow poisoning • Several trips to SD to raise local support and take that into the legislators office ( Republicans, Democrats, Governor) • Public events- Endangered Species Day, volunteer dinners etc • Intern- Christy CaswellThe Nature Conservancy • Halted 16,000 acre poisoning on Conata Basin • FS decides to make ‘no decision’ on poisoning • May- plague was discovered on Conata Basin.  • Major events every year for prairie dogs= Endangered Species Day, Prairie Dog Day, Patagonia Wild & Scenic Film Festival, Annual Fundraiser

  7. 2009 2010 • Buffer zone in Conata has now reduced poisoning from 7840 acres in 2006 to 506 acres in 2009 • Merge w/ HSUS completed • Non-lethal management plans for willing landowners in SD and beyond • Boulder Grassland Plan- Boulder focus • Interim director • Advertise Conata Basin non-lethal success • Prairie Dog Day now moving into UT. CO is sustainable. • U.S. Environmental Center for Conflict Resolution- Conata Basin • National Grasslands & non-lethal management • Non-lethal management focus model sites- 3 year focus, broadcast success & change policy from there • Need for urban coordinator possibly mirroring desert tortoise/ developer plans in FL
