PDA • Personal Digital Assistant; a small hand-held computer that in the most basic form, allows you to store names and addresses, prepare to-do lists, schedule appointments, keep track of projects, track expenditures, take notes, and do calculations. Depending on the model, you also may be able to send or receive e-mail; do word processing; play MP3 music files; get news, entertainment and stock quotes from the Internet; play video games; and have an integrated digital camera or GPS receiver.

  4. The Old PDA • PDA=Fat Little Notebook/sterile tie holders • Stylet=Pencil or Pen • Computer processor=your brain • Word processor=your hand

  5. Some Drawbacks to notebooks • How many notebooks do you use? • Changing information/pen vs. pencil • Adding a procedure for a doctor • Organization of procedures within the book • Degradation of the information/ torn paper • How is your handwriting

  6. Pluses for the notebook • Inexpensive- .29$- a couple of dollars • Never crashes or locks up • No need for batteries • If dropped, chances are it will survive

  7. Pluses to PDAs • Easily organized • Can hold a virtually unlimited amount of information (with enough RAM) • Prices are dropping steadily $30.00-600.00 • Information is easily transferred to others • Can play some fun games

  8. PDA drawbacks • Still kind of expensive • It can take a while to add information • Will break if dropped • It can crash and loose information

  9. What to look for in a PDA • What do you want it to do? • E-mail • Keep a calendar • Word processing • Play MP3s • Play video • Hold pictures

  10. What to look for in a PDA • CPU=speed • RAM-can more be added?/Expansion • How much does it cost • Screen size • Color Vs. Black and white • Price • Audio

  11. What to look for in a PDA • Operating System (os) • Palm Vs. Windows • Power • Double AA’s Vs. Lithium • Wireless capabilities • Blackberry Vs. 802.11b • Built in Camera • Built in Phone

  12. What to look for in a PDA • Accessories • Programs • Cost • Platform/os • Cost • Availability • Cost • Ease of use • COST!!!

  13. How can we Utilize this tool? • Readings and/or lectures can be downloaded • PowerPoint presentations • Word documents • Pictures • Lectures in MP3 from • Videos

  14. How can we Utilize this tool? • Assignments • Downloadable projects • Templates of documents • Turned in by e-mail or IR beaming • E-mail to the learner • Date books easily used

  15. How can we Utilize this tool? • Medical Dictionaries can be downloaded • Surgical procedural programs are available • Skyscape • Medication programs are available such as e-pocrates • Many other available programs

  16. How can we Utilize this tool? • What do we wish the student to accomplish? • What are our goals? • What are our objectives? • What do we want the student to learn? • What do we expect

Study sheets for cases/ Case Prep • A single word document/ Documents To GO • Student fills out the information on their computer the night before and downloads this to the PDA • The information is IR beamed to the instructors PDA • Instructor goes through the information, makes comments and beams it back

  18. Study sheets for cases/ Case Prep • Student makes corrections as necessary • Stores information for later retrieval • Student can share this information • Instructor stores this information • Instructor has something to share with future students

  19. Daily evaluations • Daily evaluation sheets can be stored on the PDA • As the day progresses, Notes can be added to the sheets • At the end of the day you Beam the grade to the student • Grades will be stored on the main computer later

  20. Student addresses • How many people have student addresses and phone numbers with them at the clinical sites? • It is a matter of point-click-beam

  21. Is your institution wireless? • Many teaching hospitals are becoming wireless • Wireless for computers • Wireless for PDAs • Patient records can be accessed • Schedules can be accessed • Prescriptions written and sent

  22. Things to think about • Plan out what you wish to accomplish • Make the product fit your plan • Will every student have a PDA or can they afford one? • Understand the learning curve • Understand more and more students entering surgical technology today were brought up with computers

  23. Things to think about • PDAs are very common in Medical schools today • It is just a matter of time until we reach this next level • We talk about the right tool for the right job • Time saved is time we can spend at the beach ;-)
