Insulating Varnish and type of Varnishes
Insulating Varnish and type of Varnishes Varnish is a clear transparent hard protective finish or film. Insulating Vanish is Widely used in turbo generators, industrial machines, electrical motors, power transformers, high and low voltage switchgears, motor control, gear and rewinders etc. Insulating varnishes are thermosetting resins such as epoxies or phenolics. They are used to ensure that electrical devices, including motors, generators, transformers, sensors, and other devices that function by electromagnetic induction, have the necessary electrical insulation and structural integrity for operation. Red Insulating Varnish is a highly insulating coating with excellent arc and corona resistance. This low viscosity, one-part varnish coating is easy to use and adheres well to many substrates. Applications & Usages. Used in transformers, coils, armature, motor windings, and various electric equipmentu2019s. How to apply? There are four main methods of applying varnishes for insulating purposes u2022tspraying for surface insulation u2022tbrushing for surface insulation u2022tdipping (hot or cold) u2022tvacuum impregnation. The varnish is used for the following purpose: u2022tTo bond the whole winding, wires and insulation mechanically, into a solid cohesive mass, so that it is made more resistant to shock, vibration and mechanical stress. u2022tTo improve the electrical properties of the fibrous or other insulators which should remain unimpaired by any of the various destructive influences over a period at least as long as the designed life of the component. u2022tTo protect the winding against the destructive effects of oil, acid and other chemicals, petrol, damp, heat and mound growth and to provide anti-tracking properties. u2022tTo seal all fibrous or hygroscopic materials in the winding against the absorption of moisture. Advantages: u2022tCan be stored up to 80 C. u2022tCompatible with most normal insulation systems. u2022tTough, flexible, anti-tracking finish, resistant to oil and moisture u2022tResistant to alkali, acids, solvents, transformer oil etc. Types of Varnish Varnishes may be divided into the following four categories, depending upon the type of solvent used: 1.tOil varnishes These varnishes dry slowly, but form hard and durable surface. These varnishes use linseed oil as solvent in which hard resins such as amber and copal are dissolved by heating. Oil varnishes are recommended for all external wood work, and for joinery and fittings. 2.tSpirit varnishes or lacquers These varnishes are methylated spirit of wine as solvent in which soft resins such as lac or shellac are dissolved. They dry quickly, but are not durable. French polish is a variety of this type Varnish. It is commonly used on furniture. 3.tTurpentine varnishes These varnishes use turpentine as solvent in which soft resins such as gum dimmer, mastic and rosin are dissolved. The varnish dries quickly, but is not so durable. These are cheaper than oil varnishes. 4.tWater varnishes These varnishes are formed by dissolving shellac in hot water, using enough quantity of ammonia, borax, potash or soda. Water varnishes are used for varnishing wall papers, maps pictures, book jackets, etc. Electrical apparatus consisting of coils of insulated wire is usually finished off with an insulating varnish.
