How to Avoid Over-scheduling Your Teenager • As your teen gets in high school, the possibilities are limitless-- they have their life ahead of them, they're preparing for college, and they are faced with a variety of clubs and activities that might effectively pique their interest. In addition, lots of college scholarship applications fare much better with a few extracurricular activities and volunteer work. • But where do you fix a limit? • Research studies reveal that teenagers these days are not getting adequate sleep, and are functioning off of severe sleep deprivation. Sleep deprivation can cause a variety of problems in individuals, including irritability, inability to focus, memory lapses, reduced response time, aches and hallucinations. Considering most teenagers currently do not receive enough sleep (approximately 6 hours a night for most teenagers), it's a shock that our teens function at all! Between school, after-school activities, homework, and interacting socially, sleep appears to come last for many high schoolers. • Tension continues to be an issue for teenagers. In a 2003 study done by Liberty Mutual and SADD (Trainees Versus Devastating Decisions/Drunk Driving), 59% of teenagers in between the ages of 15 and 17 felt stressed every day. That number just lowers a little to 43% throughout the ages of 13 and 14. Studies reveal that when parents are stressed out, kids are stressed out too, so participate together in activities that can help you all relax together as a family. • * Monitor your children and teens for marked indications of distress. If their school grades are dropping, their cravings and sleeping schedule appear to alter, and they appear more remote or peaceful, they may be dealing with a great deal of tension or anxiety. Talk with your teens regularly about their day, and bear in mind of any changes that you see in them throughout busy extracurricular activities. • * Send them outside! A little fresh out and outside play never ever hurt anyone! Send them down to the park with some buddies to play some basketball, or have them ride their bike down to the shop to pick up some food for dinner.
