Key Services and Penetration • Telephone Services Telephone services are dominated by China Telecom • Wireless Services Wireless communications networks and services jumped from 700 to 234,470,000. • Data and Internet Services Users of frame relay and ATM services increased from approximately 44,800 in 2000 to approximately 75,700 in 2001

History Background • The first telephone The first telephone system was imported into Thailand in 1881 with 60 subscribes initially and it was in use for 20 years • The Telecommunication Organization of Thailand The TOT was established by the government in 1954 to provide telephone service in Bangkok Metropolis. Today, the TOT is still the main telephone provider in Thailand
Current Industry • Fixed lines services are mainly provided by 3 companies • TOT, as a state-owned organization, has covered whole nation with 3.56 million lines. • TA has 2.6 million lines in Bangkok Metropolitan Area while TT&T has 1.5 million in provincial network. • International communication and Internet services The international communication are mainly provided by CAT, a state run organization and biggest Internet services provider is Internet Thailand. • Mobile communication system Mobile telephone system started from 1986 and there are 7services provider.
Key Services and Penetration • Four main methods of telecommunication services are available in Thailand. • Telephone services are dominated by TOT who install and assign telephone numbers. Now it supplies 9 main services for phone users. • Mobile phone services are more popular because of the high competitiveness and nowadays 5 systems are available in Thailand. • Pagers are so popular in Thailand because of the cheap price and monthly services fee. And the pager can be used as the clock, dictionary and personal secretaries. • Internet services has a huge growing market and broadband services are now supplied by more companies
The factors influencing the telecommunication industry • Activation • The privatization The breakage of monopoly will encourage the private companies to share the market of the telecommunication industry and ensure a free and equal market for all companies. • The Policy The government is trying to abstract the investment from all over the world and the IT services are becoming more and more important.

History • 1832: Revolution started in telecommunication field due to the invention of telegraph apparatus • 1884: State start to install telecommunication infrastructure itself • 1921: New Economic Policy: created an extremely fragmented telephone system • Mid 1980’s: Economic decision made by Gorbachev benefited Russian telecommunication industry • 1990: General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade benefited international connectivity
Current Structure compared with other European countries, it is very weak • traditional (state-controlled) operatorsstill control the public telecommunications networks in domestic telephone telecommunications in long-distance and international services • the chief regulatory statute:Law on Communications was enacted in 1995 • the chief regulatory agency:Ministry of Communications frequency allocations standardization of equipment levels of competition establishment of optimal user rates
New Projects • Combine computer intelligence with telecommunications ISDN value-added service • Introduce new broadband transmission technologies fiber optics satellites
Key services • Fix telephone service the most important services 2001: 20 phone lines per 100 people • Cellular network service mobile communications have trans-border availability the major barriers: 1. Insufficient content services 2. low consumer purchasing power 2003: 13.4% of population (19.28m) • Internet access service offer a broad range of new services for users: a fast, flexible and reliable system for telephone companies: increasing revenue and a growing use of the network for the whole industry: an increased market volume for equipment
