The Humanities Include • Language (both modern and classical) • Linguistics • Literature • History • Jurisprudence • Philosophy • Archaeology • Comparative Religion • Ethics • The Arts (History, Theory and Criticism) • Social Sciences • Aspects that have humanistic content and employ humanistic methods • Study & application of the humanities to human environment with attention to reflecting diverse heritage, traditions, and histories and to the relevance of the humanities to the current conditions of national life.“ (Taken from the 1965 National Foundation on the Arts and Humanities Act)
Summer Stipend Supports • Individuals working on advanced research of value to humanities scholars, general audiences, or both • Production of articles, monographs, books, digital materials, archaeological site reports, translations, editions, or other scholarly resources • Full-time work on a humanities project for a period of two months • Projects at any stage of development

Supports work done in two summer months but arrangements can be made for other times of the year if necessary and with NEH approval Recipients may hold only one NEH-administered program in support of individual research (Fellowship, Summer Stipend, Teaching Development Fellowship) in federal FY2011(Oct 1, 2010-Sept 30, 2011) $6,000 for two consecutive months of required full-time research for and/or writing the funded project Recipients may hold other research grants at the same time as the Stipend but they must devote full-time work to Summer Stipends projects during the two-month tenure of the award. Rules and Regulations • University-affiliated scholars enter the university’s internal competition • University selects two scholars as its candidates in the national competition • The NEH Chairperson selects the awardees based on recommendations from the Peer Review Reading Committees • Prior winners may compete again after a five-year hiatus from their last Stipend award • The award is to the scholar, not the university
Final Product and Dissemination • NEH intends that the awards it makes results in work that finds “the broadest possible audience” • To attain that goal, NEH expects scholars, educators, students, and the public to find that NEH grant products area readily accessible • NEH requires that the Summer Stipends awards meet this goal • Scholars’ projects may result in the creation of digital resources, such as websites, and especially those that are free to the public. • Detailed guidance on access and dissemination matters can be found in Section IV of the Summer Stipend Guidelines,

Eligible Candidates • US Citizens & Foreign Nationals who reside in the US or one of its jurisdictions • Residency must begin at least three years prior to the time of application. Ineligible Candidates • Recipients of a Summer Stipend in 2003 or • the Following years • Students enrolled in a degree program
Exempt from Nomination • Independent scholars not affiliated with a college or university • Non-faculty college and university staff members who will not be teaching during the academic year preceding the award tenure • Adjunct faculty, part-time faculty, and applicants with academic appointments that terminate by the summer of the award tenure
Doctoral dissertation or Thesis Research by students in degree programs Specific policy studies Educational or technical impact assessments Preparation/Publication of textbooks Studies of teaching methods or theories Surveys of courses and programs Curriculum development Inventories of collections Creative or performing arts work (painting, writing fiction or poetry, dance performance, etc.) Projects promoting a particular political, religious, or ideological point of view Projects advocating a particular program of social action Ineligible Uses
