  2. Introduction • AIDA is the acronym from it’s name in French • AIDA’s Constitution (or By-Laws) comprises 17 articles written in the five official languages: • English • French • Spanish • Italian • German • Adopted in Copenhagen 21 June 1990; amended in Sydney in August 1994

  3. AIDA’s objectives • Non-profit association • Unlimited duration • Promotion and development of collaboration between its world-wide members • To increase the study and knowledge of insurance law • Focus is on both national and international insurance law

  4. The History • Founded in Luxembourg on 28 April 1960 • First Presidents were Donati and Moller • First National Chapter in Italy on 19th May 1960 • First World Congress in Rome in April 1962 • 1,000 delegates from more than 50 countries

The History • Donati on World Congresses 'Considering the large attendance at this Congress and therefore the presence of scholars of such different origins, it is necessary to reach an understanding on questions of principal, on broad trends and on overall architectural lines rather than particular issues.'

  6. The History • The Rome Congress 1962 • The three themes were: • The juridical concept of insurance; • The functions and scope of private insurance and social security; and • The state control of insurance

The History • Hamburg Congress 1966 • Marked the first time that the report and debates on the major themes were based on reports from National Chapters • The themes were of more direct importance to specific countries but included: • State intervention for insurance companies in difficulty; • Reducing the costs of civil liability insurance; and • The effect of the policy holders' behaviour on contractual guarantees

  25. Conclusion Those of us who have a passion for good law and a liking for the many challenges presented by the world of insurance need no convincing about the value of an organisation such as AIDA.
