BRFSS established in 1984 by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). • Is a state-based system of health surveys (BRFS) to collect information about adult health risk behaviors, preventive health practices, and health care access. • For many states, the BRFSS is the only available source of timely, accurate data on health-related behaviors. • Survey is conducted annually by all 50 states using a core set of questions. • Many communities (i.e. counties, large cities, regions, etc.) have an interest in knowing how local health-related behaviors compare to state and national trends → → local BRFS.
