6. Principles and Standards 1. The essential elements of personal development and ethics in sports are embodied in the concept of sportsmanship, fostering good character, and teaching positive life skills to help youth to become personally successful.
2. It is the duty of youth sports leadership - including coaches, program directors, game officials, spectators, and parents to promote good sportsmanship and foster good character by teaching, enforcing, advocating, and modeling good character.
7. Principles and Standards
3. Participation in athletic programs is a privilege, not a right. To earn the privilege a participant must abide by the rules, enforce the spirit of the rules, and they must conduct themselves, on and off the field, as role models who exemplify high integrity and great character.
4. Youth sports leadership must establish standards for participation by adopting and enforcing codes of conduct for coaches, athletes, parents, spectators, game officials, and youth administrators.
8. Principles and Standards 5. The importance of character, ethics, and sportsmanship must be emphasized in all communications directed to any of the participants.
6. Youth sports leadership must maintain a priority with their participants that they are committed to the academic success of their participants. Commitment will be assured by scheduling appropriate times for practices and events.
9. Principles and Standards
7. Youth sports leadership must maintain the ultimate responsibility for the quality and integrity of their program. They must assure that education and character development responsibilities are not compromised to achieve sports performance goals. The pressure to win should not be placed ahead of the well-being of the participant.
10. Principles and Standards 8. Each participant involved in competition has a duty to honor the traditions of the sport and treat other participants with respect. Coaches have a social responsibility to model respectful behavior and the duty to demand that from their athletes refrain from disrespectful conduct, including verbal abuse of opponents and officials, profane or belligerent trash-talking, taunting and inappropriate celebrations.
11. Principles and Standards 9. Because sports has the potential for positive personal growth, youth sports offerings must be made available to meet the needs of our diverse communities.
10. To safeguard the health of the athletes and the integrity of the sport, sports programs must prohibit the use of alcohol, tobacco, drugs, and performance enhancing substances, as well as demand compliance with all the laws and regulations, including those related to gambling and use of drugs.
12. Principles and Standards 11. Organizations that offer sports programs must safeguard the integrity of their program by monitoring their commercial interests. They must be aware of undue interference or influence of commercial interests. Sports programs must be prudent, avoiding undue influence of financial dependency on particular companies or sponsors.
