Linear Motion Chapter 2.1
Motion is Relative • Everything moves • It just depends how you look at something
Distance vs. Displacement • Distance • How far an object moved from its original location • Displacement • How far an object is from the starting point
Speed • Measure of how fast something is moving • Rate: • Distance/time (read: distance per time) • Common units: m/s (meters per second)
Instantaneous Speed • The speed of an object at that particular instant • If your driving your car, your speedometer tells you your instantaneous speed
Average Speed • Average speed = total distance covered total time interval
Practice Problem 1 If I drive 100 km in 2 hours, what is my average speed?
Answer 1: 100 kilometers/2 hours = 50 km/h
Practice Problem 2: Minute 1: car is stopped and parked Minute 2: car is driving 60 mph Minute 3: car is driving 45 mph Minute 4: car is driving 30 mph Minute 5: car is stopped at a stop sign. If the car only traveled 2.5 miles, what is the average speed of the driver in miles/minute?
Answer 2: 2.5 miles/5 minutes = .5 miles/minute
Practice Problem 3 On my way up north, I got stuck in a traffic jam where we were driving an average speed of 20 mph for 2 hours. How far did I travel during that time?
20 miles/hour = distance/ 2 hours Distance= 40 miles
