The session is organised in cooperation with the Latvian Embassy. “The Soviet Story” is a story of an Allied power, which helped the Nazis to fight Jews and which slaughtered its own people on an industrial scale. Assisted by the West, this power triumphed on May 9th, 1945. Its crimes were made taboo, and the complete story of Europe’s most murderous regime has never been told. Until now… The film tells the story of the Soviet regime. - The Great Famine in Ukraine (1932/33)- The Katyn massacre (1940)- The SS-KGB partnership - Soviet mass deportations- Medical experiments in the GULAG. These are just a few of the subjects covered in the film. “The Soviet Story” also discusses the impact of the Soviet legacy on modern day Europe. Listen to experts and European MPs discussing the implications of a selective attitude towards mass murder; and meet a woman describing the burial of her new born son in a GULAG concentration camp.The Soviet Story is a story of pain, injustice and “realpolitik”.

Lone Scherfig has directed an original Danish comedy about people in a small town who slowly but surely no longer trust each other. They even get frightened by a naked man who has been seen one early morning walking through town. Luckily a small group of people are determined to find the naked man and help the town back to normal. They will soon find out that not only are they helping each other – they are also helping themselves. A film about trust, love and community.

This film is brought to you in cooperation with the Hungarian Institute. "Chameleon" has been proposed for 2009 Oscar nominee candidate in the category of Best Foreign Language Movie. Gábor Farkas is a conman by profession. He ensnares plain-looking, lonely women with acts of love and then cheats them out of their savings. One day he becomes tired of his small-time swindles and craves a real challenge. He meets Hanna, a rich and beautiful ballerina who is trying to return to the stage after an absence from it caused by an accident. Gábor has to use every trick up his sleeve in order to make the girl take him seriously: he acquires a luxury apartment, a sports car, a medical degree and even an entire hospital to impress her. But his lies are so complicated that he gets entangled in his own ropes and in the end is no longer even sure what he wants to achieve.

The story takes place in East Berlin in 1984. The Minister of Culture hopes to boost his career when starting a secret investigation on writer Georg Dreyman and his girlfriend, an actress Christa-Maria Sieland. Truly devoted Stasi agent Wiesler will be assigned for the job. What the authorities didn’t anticipate, however, was that submerging oneself into the world of the target also changes the surveillance agent. The immersion in The Lives of Others – in love, literature, free thinking and speech – makes Wiesler acutely aware of the meagerness of his own existence and opens to him a completely new way of life which he has ever more trouble resisting. But the system, once started, cannot be stopped. A dangerous game has begun... The Lives of Others is an intensely gripping thriller and moving love story featuring some of Germany's most internationally celebrated actors. In 2007, the movie was nominated an Oscar in the category of The Best Foreign Language Movie.

Screening in cooperation with the French Cultural Centre. The Police of Paris is frustrated by undefeated criminal gang committing series of violent robberies. Leo Vrinks and Denis Klein are two policemen, who have been seeking for promotion for a long time. The sudden departure of the Police Chief sets them to compete for the vacant throne. The competition becomes extremely violent, departing the lines of morality. In the end, there seems to be no difference between the deeds of police and criminals in the city.

His marriage with the not so ordinary Bente is on the verge of a breakdown. Jan's boss finally sends him into group therapy where an unlikely friendship emerges between Jan and the two mechanics Rudy and Alf. Had Jan only known, that Alf loved opera, and had Bente known what Rudy and Alf were up to, they would never have let them into their home. On the corner of chance and destiny, their lives take unexpected turns.

Back in Hungary revolutionaries and counter-revolutionaries alike regard Miki’s jobless father with suspicion. Miki – who is a great guitarist and singer with dreams of becoming the next Jerry Lee Lewis – is not accepted by his former friends and his first love, Vera, now has a new boyfriend.Miki is left with but one choice: to apply to a talent show and prove to everybody that he has a place in this old-new world.

This film is brought to you in cooperation with the French Cultural Centre. Hélène and Gérard are sitting in an airport cafeteria and waiting to board the plane to Buenos-Aires when he announces that he is leaving her, that he does not love her anymore and that he is going on the journey alone. Hélène is thoroughly shaken and completely lost. She tries to reason with him but he escapes. Unable to catch him, she decides to make the airport her home. Soon she starts to sell herself to travellers in transit. The beginning is slightly awkward but, as the time passes, she gets more and more confident. Dominique Blanc won many awards for her outstanding performance as Hélène and the film received, among other prizes, the Best Film at the 2000 Kiev Film Festival and at the Buenos Aires international festival.

This film is brought to you in cooperation with the Embassy of Denmark. Erik Nietzsche is an intelligent but in many ways inexperienced shy young man who is convinced that he wants to be a film director. In the late 1970s Erik is accepted by the Danish National Film School where he enters a world of angry unhelpful tutors, weird fellow students and unwritten rules. It is both an exhilarating and angst-provoking period and Erik feels increasingly like a foreigner in the film industry. Heencounters trade union disputes, falls in love and experiences self-assured, empowered women who refuse to make a commitment. It is a drama full of comedy — a sharp portrait of a conceited but entertaining world of film which we suspect our dogged young director will eventually concur with his vision.

This film is brought to you in cooperation with the Goethe Institute and the Embassy of Germany. The movie is based on novel by Thomas Brussig and about life in East Berlin inthe 1970s. Both the movie and the book emphasize the importance of pop-art and in particular, pop music, for the youth of East Berlin. Michael (or 'Micha') is a 17-year-old growing up in communist East Germany in the 1970s. He spends his time with his friends listening to banned pop music and partying. Micha is trying to win over the heart of Miriam, who is dating a West Berlin boy. Over the course of the movie Michael and his friends need to make compromises between their own believes and the ones of the communist society they live in.

Dénes Suha, who was doing occasional work at the victim’s house, is questioned by police as a witness, only to end up accused of the murder itself. The evidence against him is far from overwhelming, yet deemed sufficient to try him in court.

With this session we celebrate the International Human Rights Day (10th of December). The film is brought to you in cooperation with the Open Estonia Foundation. In 1988 Joshua witnessed as a little boy a violent crackdown of the Burmese military junta on demonstrators, during which more than three thousand people were killed. Since that time he has decided to fight for democracy. Armed with a small video camera and a mobile telephone he decided, together with thirty brave young Burmese from exile television station Democratic Voice of Burma, to document in detail the pro-democracy demonstrations in September 2007 and their brutal dispersal. The dramatic events captured by the reporters’ cameras made headlines around the world and for some time afforded the only opportunity for the world to learn of the actual situation in Burma. The gripping documentary offers a detailed and authentic record of the events when the Burmese overcame, after nineteen years, their deep-rooted fear of government repression and took to the streets of Rangoon with massive support from Buddhist monks. Burma VJ has won a number of awards at international festivals, including the Vaclav Havel Special Award at the One World Human Rights Film Festival and the main prize at the documentary film festivals CPH: DOX in Copenhagen and IDFA in Amsterdam.

Old conflicts are brought to life, things start to hot up, and pretty soon it’s not only the cat who’s in trouble.
