  1. Digital SAT: Tips to Prepare for Vocabulary Questions The word choice questions on the SAT test vocabulary more rigorously. If you are one of the new test takers, how can you prepare to ace these questions? Start immediately by adding new words to your repertoire Developing a vocabulary takes time and effort. Instead of stressing about cramming the night before, start studying right away. Here are some ideas to increase your vocabulary. Read a lot, then read more. Reading is undoubtedly the best way to learn new words because you can see how they are used in context. Read books that you find interesting and that are a little difficult. Look up any unfamiliar words you come across. To keep track of the new words you learn, keep a vocabulary journal, make some physical flashcards, or make a set of Quizlet flashcards. How to respond to vocabulary inquiries Although the College Board has not provided any details about the exact style of vocabulary questions on the Digital SAT, it is likely that many of them will not differ significantly from the word choice questions used today. However, the following strategies will be helpful for any question that assesses vocabulary in the context of a phrase, regardless of format.

  2. Decide on the outcome Vocabulary questions rarely have a single, clear-cut right answer. In contrast, two or more solution options will generally appear plausible at first. If you go over the response options and start phrasing them you won't be able to quickly determine which answer is correct. In fact, if you really wanted to, you could probably argue for each answer choice. This is due to the fact that, if you ignore the context, each answer choice is intended to sound appealing. Instead, try hiding those challenging answer choices, then read the passage again. When you reach the underlined part, say the first word that comes to mind. You will almost always think of a word that is very close to the correct response. Apply the elimination method You might hear a word or two from time to time that you're really unfamiliar with. If this happens, try not to panic! These terms are included on the SAT with the intention of scaring you and taking up more of your time. Use the process of elimination to stop this threat. Choose a word from your vocabulary if it fits in the statement. If none of the familiar words work, choose the unknown word. But don't dismiss an option just because it uses jargon you don't understand! Even if you don't know all the words, you will often be able to give the correct response. If terminology is preventing you from moving forward then the best course of action is to guess and move on. The time you waste understanding words you've never seen before can have a significant negative impact on your final grade. Be mindful of the tone In addition to guessing which word is in the sentence, remember to consider the tone of the piece. While some paragraphs will be objective and analytical, others may be strong arguments or simply entertaining. The correct response will always reflect the overall mood of the passage. Correct responses often have a more formal tone, in contrast to incorrect responses, which typically use colloquial or casual language. For untrained test-takers who don't guess their words first or who allow foreign vocabulary to intimidate them, vocabulary questions can be a real pain in the neck. Nevertheless, if you start studying right away, trust your gut and ignore unfamiliar words, you will be able to crack these questions without breaking a sweat.
