SAT Vocabulary Section 1
Here’s how this will work… • You will have a vocabulary quiz every week on these terms. Each week there will be 10 new words. At the end of the nine weeks you will have a vocabulary test that will be CUMMULATIVE—meaning it will include all of the words from the 9 weeks.
Prudent • Careful and sensible; marked by sound judgment.
Inevitable • Incapable of being avoided or prevented.
Subtle • Difficult to detect or grasp by the mind or analyze.
Compromise • An accommodation in which both sides make concessions.
Prosperity • The condition of prospering; having good fortune.
Reverence • A feeling of profound respect for someone or something.
Compassion • A deep awareness of and sympathy for another’s suffering.
Diligent • Quietly and steadily persevering, especially in detail or exactness.
Benevolent • Showing or motivated by sympathy and understanding and generosity.
Haughty • Having or showing arrogant superiority to an disdain of those one views as unworthy.
Disdain • Lack of respect accompanied by a feeling of intense dislike.
hypothesis • A tentative insight into the natural world; A concept that is not yet verified but if true would explain certain facts or phenomena
Venerable • Profoundly honored
Restrained • Under restraint; held back
Orator • A person who delivers a speech or oration.
Spontaneous • Said or done without having been planned or written in advance.
Abstain • Choose not to consume or partake in.
Asylum • A shelter for danger or hardship; an institution for the maintenance and care of the mentally ill, orphans, or other persons requiring specialized assistance.
Wary • Marked by keen caution and watchful prudence.
Impetuous • Characterized by undue haste and lack of thought or deliberation.
Foster • Providing or receiving nurture or parental care though not related by blood or legal ties • As a child in foster care, Madeline knows what it’s like to move around a lot.
Superficial • being on or near the surface • It is important to not be superficial in order to lead a meaningful life.
abate • Become less in amount or intensity • William begs to abate their daily homework, but to no avail.
Sagacity • The mental ability to understand and discriminate between relations • Madison has the sagacity to do well in this class.
Superfluous • More than is needed, desired, or required • One of these days, Chris will learn to stop the superfluous talking and complete his assignments.
Vindication • Proving to be right by providing justification or proof • It’s a good feeling to receive vindication for your actions.
Reconciliation • The reestablishing cordial relations • Hopefully Hayden can foster a reconciliation with Mrs. Hodges and accept that his team is not that great.
Collaborate • Work together towards a common goal • I love when students collaborate during class work and work diligently to understand the material.
Impute • Attribute or credit to • Students impute their good grades to hard work and determination
Bias • A partiality (opinion) that prevents objective consideration of a situation • I may be bias, but Mrs. Hodges has the best students in her 3rd block here at Nansemond River High School.
Discredit • Verb • harm the good reputation of (someone or something). • Synonyms: disgrace, dishonor
Capitulate • Verb • Surrender under agreed conditions • Synonyms: surrender, yield, submit
Canny • Adjective • having or showing shrewdness and good judgment, esp. in money or business matters. • Synonyms: Smart, shrewd, discerning, perceptive, sharp
Aesthetic • Adjective • Characterizes by an appreciation of beauty or good taste • Synonyms: artistic, tasteful • That painting has an aesthetic quality that makes it pleasing to the eye.
Fortitude • Noun • Strength of mind that enables one to ensure adversity with courage • Synonyms: bravery, endurance, resilliance
Brazen • Adjective • Unrestrained by convention or propriety • Synonyms: Bold, shameless, unembarrassed
Emulate • Verb • Strive to equal or match, especially by imitating • Synonyms: imitate, copy, mirror, follow
Boisterous • Adjective • Full of rough and exuberant animal spirits • Synonyms: rowdy, excited
Conditional • Adjective • subject to one or more conditions or requirements being met; made or granted on certain terms. • Synonyms: Subject to, dependent on
Frugal • Adjective • Avoiding waste • Synonym: thrifty
transient • Adjective • Lasting a very short time • Synonyms: temporary, short-term, brief
Intrepid • Adjective • Invulnerable to fear or intimidation • Synonyms: Invulnerable, fearless, undaunted, unafraid
Adversity • Noun • A state of misfortune or affliction • Synonyms: hardships, trials
Submissive • Adjective • Inclined or willing to submit to orders or wishes of others • Synonyms: compliant, yielding, passive
