  1. Home Treatments Bookings About Contact Us Book an appointment Diabetes & Circulation Assessment When people think of diabetes, they may not think that feet are involved but they are closely linked when it comes to this disease that approximately 280 Australians develop each day. How are feet affected by diabetes? When you have diabetes, there is an increased chance of developing a range of nerve-related complications including ‘peripheral neuropathy, a type of nerve damage that can affect how you feel pain or pressure in your feet and may even result in numbness in the toes and feet.  There is also an increased chance of developing ‘peripheral vascular disease’ which means poor circulation in your feet. Changes to circulation can slow down your body’s natural healing process when it comes to cuts, sore as well as increase your risk of developing ulcers that may lead to amputation.

  2. How do I know if I have diabetes-related foot problems? One of the first symptoms many people with diabetes experience happens to their feet which is why it’s important to take care of and pay close attention to your feet if you have been diagnosed with diabetes. Keep an eye out for symptoms such as numbness, cold feet, sharp pains in your legs after walking, pins and needle sensations any corns, callouses or cracked or dry skin or changes to your nails. Redder skin on your feet is another sign and if you notice any signs of infection, seek medical attention as soon as you can.  What can I do to manage my feet if I have diabetes? There are a few simple things you can do to help manage the health of your feet when you have diabetes, in addition to keeping an eye out for any changes to your feet.  Moisturise your feet every day to hydrate your skin Trim your toenails regularly Ensure your feet are clean and dry, especially between your toes Schedule regular checkups with your podiatrist Follow the guidance of your medical practitioner about managing your blood glucose levels and lifestyle recommendations
