What Do They Do? • Codeine and Hydrocodone are one of the most effective painkillers. They bond to the opioid receptors and function by altering one’s perception of pain. They are only available with a prescription and must be taken according to prescribed dosage to avoid abuse. • Each of them has different purposes. Codeine is usually prescribed in case of mild to moderate pain whereas Hydrocodone is slightly more powerful. It is used for more severe pain.
Forms and Dosage • Both narcotic syrups codeine and hydrocodoneare available as immediate- release oral tablets. • Codeine is available in 15 mg, 30 mg, and 60 mg dosages. Doctors usually guide patients to take it every four hours. However, it may vary as per the needs. • Hydrocodone is usually combined with acetaminophen. These are usually available in 2.5 mg, 5 mg, 7.5 mg and 10 mg dosages. Usually, it is advised to take one tablet every 4 to 6 hours as per the patient’s needs or prescribed by the doctor. • The drugs are advised to be initiated at the lowest possible dose. The dose may be gradually increased if required.
