Therefore, many government and private colleges in India are offering various courses in applied psychology. In addition, counselling psychologists can help people deal with their everyday problems, while clinical psychologists focus on dealing with mental illness. Career Prospects There were about 160,200 psychologists in the country in 2012. Of these, an estimated 31 percentage worked in education, 29 percentage worked in social assistance and healthcare, and about 33 percentage were self- employed, which means that they practice in private. An applied psychologist can work alone in areas such as counselling or independent research. They self-employed psychologists can have their own offices and set their own schedule as well.  However, there are clinical psychologists, who work in hospitals, clinics, mental health facilities, rehabilitation facilities and community centers, where they work in a team with other doctors and professionals, such as social workers, to provide holistic care and promote general wellness. A considerable proportion of psychologists work in universities and colleges, government agencies and private research organisations.
