Why do you must do an MBA after Engineering? In India, majority of MBA applicants are from engineering background and have B.Tech, B.E, M.Tech degrees or several years of work experience in engineering field. A recent study has shown that the top 25 business schools in India have 80 per cent of their students from engineering backgrounds. The trend of pursuing MBA after completing graduation is not commonly seen in cases of other academic disciplines such as law, medicine, science, commerce or arts. There must be some reasons for this. Let’s see why most of the engineers want to pursue MBA? A technical job of a specific field seems to be perfectly fitted for an engineer with sound technical skills. For example, a computer engineer would be satisfied if he gets a job in any top IT companies like Infosys, Wipro or Tidel Park. But, in the middle of his career, when he takes complete hold of his skills and maximizes his learning, a time has come when his career has reached to a quiescent period. At this time, he needs management skills to climb further up in his career path. Therefore, the management skills acquired after doing an MBA in addition to an engineering degree help to fast-track the career path of a professional. An engineer will easily reach the higher supervisory managerial level if he/she has an MBA degree. Otherwise, climbing up to the corporate ladder would become a painfully slow process. This is the primary reason for most of the engineers for taking up an MBA programme after completing B.Tech. Almost all of the corporate organizations seek the deadly combination of B.Tech plus MBA.
