A MORE EFFICIENT HIGH MAST LIGHT POLE EVALUATION PoleScanTM High Mast Light Pole Inspection Challenges By Doug Thaler Every five years the FHWA (Federal Highway Administration) requires all High Mast Light Poles inspection(HMLP) on our nation’s highways be inspected. Most conventional inspections today consist of a manual visual inspection of the pole from the ground. Inspectors may use binoculars to view the higher portions of the light pole and luminaries. Notes and pictures are taken if any Solution Infrastructure Preservation Corporation (IPC) has developed a patented robotic High Mast Light Pole Inspection service, “PoleScanTM”, which thoroughly inspects the pole, seams, luminares (including ultrasonic testing of the anchor bolts) to ensure integrity throughout. Inspection results are preserved so that future inspections can compare deterioration progression over time. This means that problem areas can be reviewed to see if the damage has increased since the previous inspection and action can be taken to ensure the integrity of the HMLP. HMLP PoleScanTM is guided from a Control Command Center via wireless remote. The entire device and wheels are all padded and rubberized so that there can be no damage to the pole surface. The HMLP inspection service is light weight and easy to deploy. The inspection results are not only more thorough and less subjective than current inspection methods, but they can help asset managers win additional government bids, save time and money.
