Green Giant Arborvitae thrives in USDA hardiness zones 5 through 8, which include more southern states than other types of Arborvitae. Due to its tolerance of heat and humidity, Green Giant is a great plant for gardens in the southern United States. The Green Giant Arborvitae grows 3 to 5 feet each year, is nearly pest-free, and is more resistant to deer than the majority of other Thuja species.

Make a hole that is two to three times as wide and deep as the root balls or pots the individual green gigantic trees are in before planting them. Tear the roots apart and place the trees in the holes with the tops of the roots just below the soil's surface. Backfill the holes with the earth and gently tamp them down to make sure there are no air pockets and the dirt is firmly in place. W A T E R I N G As they grow, your Green Giant trees will need nutrition to be strong. Each spring, treat them with an all-purpose, slow- release, granular fertilizer with a high nitrogen content, such as 16-5-9 or 18-5-12. Water it in as recommended to fully incorporate. When the trees are established during their first and second years on your property, they will need weekly watering during the growing season. Arborvitae require soil that is moist but not waterlogged. Water should be sprayed on the soil a few feet distant from the trunk rather than the roots in order to prevent root rot. P R U N I N G To assist the roots to retain moisture, spread 2 to 3 inches of mulch out to the dripline of the trees, being careful to keep it away from the base of the tree trunks. For this, most types of mulch, including bark, leaves, and even rock, are suitable. Green Giant Arborvitae grow between 3 and 5 feet every year after being planted. You can cut them down each year to the desired size with clean, sharp shears or electric hedge trimmers. Arborvitae only develops new growth at the tips of their branches, never in the older, bare spots close to the trunk. M U L C H I N G
G R O W I N G G R E E N G I A N T A R B O R V I T A E I N C O N T A I N E R S Around a pool, patio, or front entrance, Green Giant Arborvitae can be planted successfully in pots as accents. Choose a large pot (18 to 24 inches in diameter) or a half barrel for trees that are 6 to 8 feet high. Verify sure the pot's bottom has holes so that the water may drain. If water accumulates in the pot, your tree can be at danger of developing root rot. Place a loose, well-draining potting mix within the container to allow for root extension and air circulation. Never use garden soil, soil from a commercial garden, or dirt from trees. It is too dense and compacts too quickly in a container, suffocating the roots.
