  1. When planting a border, it is best to pick a variety of sizes, shapes, textures, and colors. You might plant in a row that is slightly staggered to make it look natural. Consider the size of the plants while deciding how near to place them. You need to give the plants room to grow, but you also need the gaps to be filled up by the plants in a timely manner. When planting trees and bushes, narrow-growing plants should be placed 2-3 feet apart, while wider-growing plants should be planted 3-5 feet apart. Hedge planting should be done in a straight line with little gaps between each plant. Plant wider varieties 2-3 feet away from narrower ones, and vice versa.
