  2. When someone has tuberculosis (TB), the illness can spread to others, but only if it's active. If it's dormant, it can't spread. Active TB usually spreads through tiny droplets in the air. TB is caused by a bacterium called Mycobacterium tuberculosis. When it's active, it mainly affects the lungs but can also harm other parts of the body like the spine or kidneys. Experts split TB into two types: latent TB infection, where there are no symptoms and it can't spread, and active TB disease, which has symptoms, can spread to others, and can be deadly if not treated.
