All about reference electrodes and their wide uses

A circuit constitutes of many different elements and it cannot really breathe without them. Out of many, an electrode forms a base element in a circuit. It is a conducting body that completes the circuit by joining the circuit with the non-metallic part of the circuit. Any electrochemical cell is seen to be having these electrode setups; usually it is a two-electrode setup, but in many cases, there is a three-electrode set up that is used.

  1. All about reference electrodes and their wide uses A circuit constitutes of many different elements and it cannot really breathe without them. Out of many, an electrode forms a base element in a circuit. It is a conducting body that completes the circuit by joining the circuit with the non-metallic part of the circuit. Any electrochemical cell is seen to be having these electrode setups; usually it is a two-electrode setup, but in many cases, there is a three-electrode set up that is used. The latter setups bring into use different types of electrodes, generally named as counter electrode and reference electrode. Reference electrodes are the electrodes that are used to maintain a constant potential. Some of these electrodes are glass electrodes, hydrogen electrodes, calomel electrodes, and silver silver chloride reference electrode. Out of these the silver silver chloride reference electrodes are most regular electrode that is used as a reference electrode. This is because there are certain properties of these electrodes that make them so much in demand in the market. They are used as they are non-toxic, affordable, simple in constitution, and stable. They are mostly used for laboratory purposes, and are used with sea water and saturated potassium chloride. These are also used in the electrochemical cells, where the charge movement from anode to cathode maintains a constant flow of the current. These electrodes are best used in studying electrochemistry, impedance testing, conductivity testing, etc.

These are used in equipment for electrochemical analysis, EEG, ECT, ECG, brain wave detection, electrolysis, and electrophysiology. The electrochemiluminescence is another big domain, where these electrodes perform an important role. So, these electrodes are used this widely besides being used in an electrochemical cell.
