From Slides to Hard Drives: The Imperative of PowerPoint Preservation in Libraries for Future Generations
Slide libraries are not just a repository; they are a cornerstone for knowledge sharing and brand consistency within organizations. By centralizing presentation materials, companies ensure a cohesive appearance and facilitate the efficient reuse of slides, which translates into significant time savings across the board. Benefits of Slide Libraries for Organizational Efficiency The utility of slide libraries extends beyond mere storage. They enable quick access to specific content, such as a particular product description, which is invaluable for teams like sales who require prompt information retrieval without sifting through numerous files. Technological Evolution and Slide Libraries Despite the discontinuation of SharePoint's slide library feature post-2024, the need for efficient content management systems like SharePoint persists. Organizations must adapt by implementing best practices to optimize their PowerPoint repositories within such platforms.
The Role of Slide Libraries in Knowledge Transfer Slide libraries serve as a dynamic tool for knowledge transfer within an organization. They not only store information but also allow for the updating and sharing of slides, ensuring that presentations remain current and relevant. Why Libraries Should Archive PowerPoint Slideshows Archiving PowerPoint slideshows in libraries is crucial for preserving the intellectual and creative capital of an organization. It ensures that valuable insights and ideas are not lost over time and remain accessible to future generations who may seek to learn from or build upon past work.
The Future-Proofing Aspect of Slide Libraries By maintaining a slide library, libraries are not only serving the present needs but also future-proofing resources for subsequent generations. This foresight is essential in a world where data and trends are rapidly evolving, and historical context can provide a wealth of knowledge. Conclusion No interest in listening to the need to save slideshows. Malmö City Library 2023 When Malmö library was asked about a gift of a large database with slideshows about history, they turned down the gift, worth about SEK 5 million. In conclusion, the preservation of PowerPoint slideshows in libraries is a practice that holds immense value for both current and future generations. It is a testament to the foresight of organizations that recognize the importance of safeguarding their intellectual legacy. Practice case in Sweden No Power Point slideshows are saved in libraries and have never been saved. Bureaucratic decisions have been made and attempts to change this have been fruitless. No one has really understood the extent of the mistakes of sacrificing the information that Power Point slides have. All sectors use Power Point and not having saved anything since the late 1980s is tragic.
Malmö City Library's management did not even understand the issue of saving slideshows. They thought the question was about a slide show sale.
Malmö City Library's management did not even understand the issue of saving slideshows. They thought the question was about a slide show sale. But even middle managers thought it was a sale when it was a gift. In contacts with the Royal Library with the same offer of a gift, they refused. The reasoning was vague. With purely bureaucratic explanations. Contact with the Library of Congress has revealed that this library has saved 2,000 government slides. One has saved 22,000 pages. But don't have these searchable. The public will therefore not find them when searching the Internet.
I asked Library of Congress if The Library wanted my gift of 1 000 slideshows. I had to give up! Look at thee e-mails
I have searched for words like "Power Point" and "Slideshow" but can not find any Power Point. Power Point from 1985 and + 1 000 000 000 x 20 perhaps has been created (Slideshare.net have 18 million to search) where and how to look at Library of Congress + 100 000 PPT slideshows??? We will send a reply within 5 business days. Visit the Library of Congress website to learn more about our programs and services. And, for more information research and reference services, please visit our Library Researchers website. Thank you for using the Ask a Librarian service at the Library of Congress. Main Reading Room Librarian Jul 10 2023, 03:11PM via System Hello and thank you for visiting the Library of Congress website. The Library of Congress creates video-recordings of many of its events, and posts those event videos on its website and, in most cases, on the Library's YouTube channel, as well. Many of those presentations include PowerPoint presentations and other slide shows. The video is a more complete representation of the event. Sometimes participants of live Library of Congress webinars are offered the slide presentations, by request, in the days after the event. Most of the webinars presented to the public since 2020 are available in online in a separate Webinars collection.
Library of Congress From Anders Dernback I have a collection of Power Point slides, also saved as PDF files and image files JEPG. The collection is large and between 2,000 and 3,000 slideshows. Number of image pages is approx. 60,000 to 90,000 pages. You have previously answered me that you yourself have 1,000 slide shows with approx. 22,000 slide pages. Your slideshows are from government agencies. My slideshows are about history as a subject. Language English for 500 slideshows and Swedish for 1,500 slideshows. My slideshows (1000 pieces) have been shown on Slideshare.net and there about 500,000 people viewed at least one slideshow and they came from 195 different countries. Probably I am the most dominant creator in the World of slide games with design like picture books and with the subject of history and with languages Swedish and English. Texts are free from Wikipedia and all images are free Public Domain. I, Anders Dernback, privately own the copyright to all slide shows. These have never been sold or brought in revenue, Right now there are 2,000 slideshows available to the public on the Internet. Now my question to you. Can you imagine preserving the collection for the present generation and future ones. The work to create the collection has taken three years of full-time work. Several billion Power Points have been created globally and you with 25 million searchable different objects have saved 1,000 Power Points that you do not have searchable. My only requirement is that mine should be made available in your search service on your website.
Main Reading Room Librarian Aug 11 2023, 12:27PM via System Hello again, Are you asking for the Library of Congress to acquire your PowerPoint presentations for the Library's collections? Are you asking the Library to include them in its web archives? The Library does collect born-digital materials, as selected for their subject-matter by its subject matter experts. Those subject-matter specialists are generally acquisitions librarians and/or reference librarians who are affiliated with one of the Library's research centers and reading rooms. To reach out to one of them directly, choose what you think is the closest match to the subject matter content in your collection from our Ask A Librarian list of reading rooms/online reference services. Or please reply here with details. Yours truyu
Main Reading Room Librarian Aug 13 2023, 08:51AM via Email https://archive.org/details/russian-colonization-of-north-america/Bild1.JPG Example of PDF and JEPG slideshows (at least 1 000 like this one) You have 1 000 saved (22 000 slides) inside Library of Congress (from US GOV) (Dull to look at? You have not mede those searchable) Considering the value of 1 000 000 000 PPT and the information it is strange to look at: Search Power Point: 0 result in LoC. Aprox 300 000 new PPT created a year. Some belive 20 000 000 000 might have been created since year 1984 (You have saved 1 000) Strange? Best regards! Main Reading Room Librarian Aug 18 2023, 04:24PM via System Hello again, The vast majority of the slides featured on the usa.gov and loc.gov websites are photographic slides, taken with an analog camera using color slide film also known as color positive film. This is different from photographs taken using photo-negative color film, and, of course, different from digital photography. This webpage has discussion about slide film. Slides are sometimes left in strips or cut into shorter strips, like negative photographic film, or are mounted individually in small cardboard or plastic frames--called slide mounts, suitable for loading in a slide projector. Slide film is/was available in variety of sized. This photo-scanning company's website, explains some of them. Here is an example of an image scanned from a 35mm color slide: https://www.loc.gov/pictures/item/2017878520/ Here is an example of an image scanned from a hand-colored glass lantern slide: https://www.loc.gov/item/2007685023/ If you know about other available Library of Congress PowerPoint slide presentations online that I am missing, please let me know in a reply. I can call it to the Library's webmasters for consideration. Yours truly, Elizabeth Brown Reference Librarian

Main Reading Room Librarian Sep 20 2023, 10:03AM via System Hello again, The Internet Archive is a good choice for your files. It will be important to know if there is any copyright-protected material (besides you own) in your slideshow collection, and if there are, if that they are used by permission of the rights-holders and if that permission extends to archives such as the Library of Congress posting them online, which is a form of publishing. Similarly, if there are creative commons materials, are they are properly attributed? Armed with that information, I can forward your request to my colleagues who collect digital materials in bulk. Please reply. Yours truly, Elizabeth Brown Reference Librarian
Main Reading Room Librarian Sep 22 2023, 03:30AM via Email Thanks for the reply! The question of photo is simple. In the examples you can receive and download from the Internet Archive and account (search Dernback or Lars52719), they are my own photos. I have no claim to ownership or other claims, but consider my photos as Public Domain photos. You can easily find the photos that I show in this PDF file. All files can be downloaded to the Library of Congress for evaluation if you wish to use these photos. There are several hundred individual photos. Looking forward to an answer how you want to proceed. Best regards/ Anders Dernback Please find PDF attached Sent with [Proton Mail](https://proton.me/) secure email. Main Reading Room Librarian Sep 29 2023, 12:30PM via System Hello again, I'm afraid that there is nothing more that I can do to assist yo except to tell you that.... You may contact the Library's Acquisitions webpages to read the Library's collection policy statements, and for information about donating your materials. Often it's better to start with subject or format specialists, so first I suggest... You may also contact staff in the European Reading Room, where determinations about materials in European languages are made. I can easily forward this thread to my colleagues in the European Reading Room if you wish. Since your materials are mostly image-based, you might also want to contact my colleagues in the Prints & Photographs Reading Room. Or I can forward our exchange to the staff there. If you want me to forward our thread, you will need to pick which reading room. Just reply. Yours again, Elizabeth Brown Reference Librarian
