World's latest mega-airport finally opens to passengers Following an official inauguration ceremony, the passenger terminal at Dubai's new Al-Maktoum International Airport received its first commercial passenger flight this weekend.
The airport is located in Jebel Ali and is part of Dubai World Central, an "aviation city" the Dubai government launched as a free economic zone.
Passengers disembark from low cost Hungarian carrier Wizz Air -- the first commercial passenger flight to land at the airport.
While the airport opened for cargo in 2010, the launch of its passenger terminal has experienced multiple delays. It's expected to handle 160 million passengers when completed in 2027.
UAE flagship carrier Emirates is expected to move its operation to the new hub by the time of the airport's completion.
