Incorporate Reading as a Habit to Your Child's Routine
WhatisReading? Reading is a habit of life that turns out to be a perfect cure for boredom, loneliness, ignorance, brain blockages and all such similar emotions.
WhyisReadingImportant? Books increase knowledge and open the world to the children while allowing them to see and think of the world beyond their routine.· They develop good language skills and their vocabulary becomes global.· It stimulates their imagination and fuels their thinking skills.· It also helps them to look beyond the usual when it will be time for their career selection.· Love for books also keeps them away from gadgets, which certainly is an added advantage.· It takes you to a completely new world of imaginations and wisdom for you to explore varied experiences based on the kind of book you are reading. · It also takes you away from all superficial things in life and creates peace and serenity.· It has a twofold effect of relaxing the mind as well as energizing it by arousing thinking and creativity.· It makes you aware of your subconscious mind and challenges thoughts and beliefs in your head.
MyPersonalExperience Revealing the benefits of reading, my mind flashed across with a query from a concern mother of a 4-year old daughter, “My daughter is 4 years old ...aur uska mind to sharp hei ..mei kya karun jisse vo aur active bane or intelligent ho..kaise guide kar skti hun..?” I feel this is a common concern for all parents as their tiny tots begin to grow and bloom into toddlers and then adolescents. My answer to her was simple, ‘The best thing that you can do for your child is to develop the habit of reading yourself if you do not read.”
WhataretheMeasuresto Inculcating theHabitofReading? Once you inculcate the habit of reading, you can gradually incorporate it to your child’s routine. You can do so by following the simple measures:· Surround the child with books.· Instead of telling stories get into the habit of reading to her.· Take her frequently to bookstores· Explore all types of books with her as per her age.Once you let your child flow with this habitual reading, you will be able to understand the numerous benefits of reading.
FeelingConnectedwithBooks One distinct advantage of getting addicted to reading is that the person is never lonely. They always feel connected and safe with their books. But remember children do not even like to play with expensive toys if they are left alone, so to develop the habit of reading you will need to spend a lot of time with them. Whenever they ask you a question, you should develop the habit to say, “Let us find out the answer”. Together browse the web, check out encyclopaedia, and look out for right answers. This way children will also learn the even when alone, they have a place to find answers to their questions.
HowtoSpendLeisureTime withYourChildren It is very important to spend open, leisure time with your children where they can just ‘talk’ - anything that comes to their mind without feeling the fear of being judged or ridiculed. This should be a time when you do not talk about studies. Even when they grow up there should be ‘study’ free time for both of you. Encourage them to look around, point out things like the way the ants walk and just have casual discussions with them. Such things improve their curiosity.
To conclude, · Remember to share real stories of your life from when you were growing up.· Do not be afraid to share your mistakes and failures at appropriate age.· This gives them the confidence to share their mistakes and failures with you while creating a selfless communication channel between you and the children.
