They direct the horses and riders into the starting gate according to the planned sequence and stall numbers. In addition, they direct track personnel to assist the rider when a horse refuses to enter the starting gate. They are also required to report any undue delays to the racing officials. They press the button to open the gate when the horses are aligned, and may recommend the removal of any horse unfit to start a race. They may, on occasion, schedule morning workouts for horses. Horse race starters must be familiar with starting gate procedures.
