  1. A Three-Step Approach to Azure Cost Optimization www.nuvento.com

  2. Step One - Define – Processes to Manage Cost When preparing to migrate to the cloud, it is critical to implement governance policies for effective enterprise cloud management. Cost optimization should be a well-defined strategy supported by your cloud governance policy. Your policies should include: Define the resource provisioning process. Determine who in your organisation will be able to deploy resources and who will be in charge of managing workloads in Azure. Define the processes of budgeting, cost allocation, and chargeback. Administer an asset tagging policy that will help you with chargebacks and cost allocation. Make it a requirement that each asset in your Azure platform be tagged with the project, department, or application with which it is associated. In addition, your policy should require the use of metrics to estimate and forecast overall costs. ● ● ● ● ●

  3. Step Two – Control – Azure Cost Reducing Tools Choose the Azure tools you'll need to manage your organization's Azure spending. There are numerous tools and resources available; a few examples are provided below: Azure Advisor – This is a service that identifies virtual machines with low utilisation, formative CPU, or network usage. You can decide whether to shut down or resize the machine based on the Advisor's estimate. It also makes cost-cutting suggestions. Azure Dev/Test Pricing – Azure provides a discount for development and testing resources, with savings of up to 55% on non-production resources. Storage Tiering – Azure Blob Storage pricing includes premium hot, cool, and archive storage tiers with multiple redundancy options. Make sure you are aware of all your options in order to make the best decision for your project. Right-Sizing VMs and Enabling Auto Scaling – Azure offers a diverse set of virtual machines (VMs) with varying hardware and performance capabilities. Only when all of your VMs are fully utilised will you achieve optimal costs. The term "virtual reality" refers to the ability to create a virtual reality experience. Moving from Database VMs to Elastic Databases – Consider moving any databases on VMs to a PaaS model. In most cases, Azure migration service will result in significant cost savings.

  4. Step Three – Monitor – Azure Cost Management The final step is to keep an eye on things. As stated in the cloud governance policy discussed in step one, it is critical that you use metrics and insights to identify any changes that are required in your Azure environment. Monitoring allows you to budget, forecast, and analyse costs. Azure Cost Management is a free service that assists in the visualisation and forecasting of costs, as well as the identification of anomalies and the identification of optimization opportunities. To proactively manage costs and drive accountability within your organisation, cost analysis can be used for budgeting and forecasting. Azure Consumption Insight is a connector for Azure Cost Management in Power BI. Use this to get more in-depth data analysis and to create custom reports and measures to better understand and analyse your Azure span.
