  2. About me • Hello! My name is Ken Maciej Starczewski and I was part of the ESC project for over 8 months in Thessaloniki, Greece. I would like to tell you about my experience, daily life and my responsibilities. I hope you will presentation! enjoy this

There were two reasons for that: I have a Greek/Cyprus family that prior to me arriving in Thessaloniki and I wanted to sightsee and learn more about Greek culture and Balkans • Why did I choose this project? I needed to be pro-active and I had no luck in getting employment where I live, so this was a perfect opportunity for me to learn new skills and Greek, but also to practice my other skillsand interact with other people. •

  4. What was the project about? The Project Picture It – Build your Future was held in Thessaloniki, Greece with the organisation United Societies of Balkans (U.S.B.). U.S.B. focuses on integration supporting young people though various actions and programs. It is also responsible for other projects, such as Balkan Hotspot that I was part of. • and Specifically, Balkan Hotspot media lab where I and other volunteers were learning about „media tools” (radio, blog, magazine, news, social media, video making/editing etc.) and in cooperation with the local volunteers we were also organising events and such. •

  5. Maintainingand contributing to the Balkan Hotspot blog Contributing to the Balkan Beats magazine What were my tasks? Organizing the events with local volunteers Reviewing, interviewing on festivals and cooperating with Radio studios etc. Taking part in workshops

  6. Maintaining and contributing to Balkan Hotspot blog • My maintain and contribute to Balkan Hotspot blog, but also to make sure that it is SEO positive (Search Engine Optimization). Any volunteer who wanted or needed to publish an article on our blog needed to have the SEO status to be positive (green) and of course in line with what USB and BH considers acceptable. • Iwrote more than 10+ articles for our blog and helped volunteers with editing SEO and then publishing it though Wordpress on our blog. main responsibility was to dozens proof-reading, of

  7. Contributing to our Balkan Beats magazine • Another important task of my own was writing articles for our bi-magazine Balkan Beats. Every article had to be connected to the theme/topic of the newly releasedmagazine. • Besides writing I was also part of editorial and helped with proof-reading and editing articles for other volunteers. Together with other members of the team we would come up with new ideas and themes for the magazine and general changes to the visuals and such.

  8. Organising events with local volunteers • Every Thursday (and later Wednesday) we would meet with the local volunteers from Thessaloniki, brainstorm ideas for events and plan tchem for the next months as well as discuss on how we will conductthoseevent. • We managed to pull off multiple events and even regularly have an open-mike event where people could perform and readtheirpoemsandotherworks.

  9. Reviewing and cooperating with radio studios etc. • During the project we were cooperating with Star Classic Radio and creatingourown podcasts. Weparticipatedinlive andpre- recorded shows for the radio and our own podcasts. I personally was part of it couple of times and even managed to interviewtheemployeesofStarClassicRadio.

  10. Taking part in workshops • We focused on both technical skills and cultural awareness. The former focused on training volunteers on how to use media tools and such (social media managing, SEO Wordpress management, podcasting, videoeditingetc.) • The latter focused onteaching volunteers about the history of Balkans, cultures and ethinicities in Greece during which I learned a lot about Greeks, Romani and the Balkanregion. had numerous workshops that

  16. • The project in Thessaloniki helped me a lot, especially with me growing confident and more comfortable with interacting with other people. On the side note, I also got to utilize my skills and learn a bit of Greek and even sightsee a bit of Thessaloniki. It was fun, but also an experience that I needed a lot. Thank you!
