7-months ESC in a Media lab Picture it — Build your future. Oct 2023 - May 2024, Thessaloniki, Greece
The project My project took place in Thessaloniki, Greece, in a media lab called Balkan Hotspot. It was about creating different kinds of media (social media content, magazine articles, blog articles, podcast, events, other projects) and organizing events. We were a team of around 10 people, and we had a supporting team of locals, with whom we collaborated on organizing events. There was a lot of freedom to create and explore what we wanted, with the necessary support.
My main focus was social media management and content creation. I created graphics and videos about the other forms of content produced by the team, as well as independently on other topics Social media
Social media I also worked of redesigning social media identity of the organization, and created a brand kit and templates for automation and organization.
Magazine During my project, we published 3 magazines covering topics like existence, politics, and intergenerationalism. I wrote several articles, created a collage promoting local initiatives in collaboration with local organizations, interviewed local people, etc. It felt really nice to explore topics that interested me, and connect with people involved in different kinds of activities.
Cookbook My hosting organization has some other volunteering projects that they organize, one of them was in a small village in Greece. It was related to food and Greek cuisine. During their project they gathered international recipes to create a cookbook, and I ended up designing it.
Blog We also had a blog website, where we published articles.
Local festivals We went to two local events to cover it for social media as press. A film festival, and an art-performance festival. We got a chance to interview several people, producers of movies and performers. That was very interesting, as we got to explore new topics and connect with diverse people, getting to know their stories and stories behind their work.
Podcast in a refugee center We also worked on a podcast in a women’s refugee center in the city. We interviewed several social workers in the center, and connected with refugee women, getting to know their life stories. Unfortunately in the end, we didn’t end up publishing it, due to lack of time, but it was a really powerful and amazing experience.
Photoshoots I also did some photoshoots during the events and in other settings.
Partner organizations My hosting organization had some other volunteering projects they organize in other towns of Greece. We visited two of them to collaborate and help. We went to Stratoni village to organize Christmas activities for kids, and to Serres to have a radio show about volunteering.
We organized some local events, like language tandem, open mics, karaoke, consent workshop, clothing swap. Also when our hosting organization made some events — we attended and helped there either: multilingualism festival, marathon, human library, water day. Events
Personal project As a personal project I worked on documenting everything about the project and its sub-teams. I included tips and instructions on how to start your stay in this place. I noticed that it was a challenge for my team to find themselves at the begining, so I decided to create something for future generations.
Workshops During my stay we also had some workshops like: journalism workshop, photography, movie review writing, event planning, podcast & radio, graphic design, social media
House This was an important part of my volunteering. We lived as a community in a volunteer house of more or less 30 people (the amount depended on the time, and people often changed). It was an intense and interesting experience — living with a lot of people from different countries and backgrounds. There were always opportunities to learn something from everyone, explore interpersonal dynamics.
In my free time sometimes I explored Thessaloniki and its vibrant streets, full of cats, random hidden gems, cafes, cool tavernas, museums, and local events. I also traveled to some random villages and small towns, and nearby beaches in Chalkidiki. Free time
