By guarding it according to your word. • Romans 8:13 - For if you live according to the flesh you will die, but if by the Spirit you put to death the deeds of the body, you will live. • It’s one thing to identify it – but the real fruit is when you then pause and contemplate it in your life. • Ask things like: “Have I read my Bible?” or “Have I prayed that the Holy Spirit would help me?”
Study Tactics – Discourse • Discourse (Story, episode, unit of thought, etc.) • How do we identify discourses? • 3) Identify Links • Look for ways a paragraph relates to the paragraph before and after it • Identify the dialogue • Look for repeated themes • Do repeated words suggest a theme and is this something that carries over? • Mark 8:11-30 • Mark 8:22-26 • Mark 8:11-21 - Mark 8:27-30
Study Tactics – Discourse • Discourse (Story, episode, unit of thought, etc.) • How do we identify discourses? • 4) Interchange • Literary device that involves the development of comparing or contrasting stories over the course of a larger story. • Ex. 1 Samuel 1-3 • Two contrasting families highlight the development of the Prophet Samuel • Ex. Acts 7-12 • Peter & Paul: Two preachers having similar success
Study Tactics – Discourse & Romans • Discourse (Story, episode, unit of thought, etc.) • How do we identify discourses? • 4) Shifts, Breaks, Pivots, Adjacency • Change from a doctrinal discussion to examples of practical application - Ephesians 1-3/4-6 • Changes in topics of discussion or comparing and contrasting themes • In class practice • Romans 1-4
Study Tactics – Discourse & Romans • Discourses in the first 3 chapters of Romans • Chapters 1-3:26 • Greetings • 1:1-15 • Theme • 1:16,17 • Universal nature of unrighteousness • 1:18-3:20 • Gentile – 1:18-32, Jew – 2:1-3:8, Universal – 3:9-20 • Homework: read Romans 3:21-11 and identify “themes”
