What is a ‘Smartphone’? • First - what is a PDA? • Personal Digital Assistant (PDA) • Calendar, Contacts, Tasks, Notes • Then came Web and Email • Palms, PocketPCs • Smartphones are cell phones with PDA functionality • Now with the ability to synchronize this information over-the-air (OTA) via cell towers or Wi-Fi (like Rice wireless) • Information is either sent to the phone (push) or the phone connects to the server (pull) • Blackberries, Treos
