  1. Swaziland Positive Living (SWAPOL) Presentation

  2. Background • Swaziland Positive living (SWAPOL) was founded in 2001 by five positive women after experiencing stigma and discrimination from their in-laws, families and community members. The organization currently has 1250 members, people living with HIV/AIDS (PLWHA) in 30 communities.

  3. Goal • To provide support to improve the quality of life for people living with HIV/AIDS ,affected families and Orphans and Vulnerable Children.

  4. Objectives • To ensure availability of food at household level • To uplift economy status for PLWHAS through economic empowerment

  5. Core Business • Capacity Building of PLWHAS • Psychosocial support for infected, affected and Orphans and Vulnerable Children • Home Base Care • Food Security and Good Nutrition

  6. Why Food Security for PLWHAs • Food Security and Nutrition has emerged as an important dimension in the Prevention, Care, Treatment and Mitigation of HIV/AIDS. A focus on Nutrition is important to the efficacy of medical interventions as it is to people’s ability to resist and mitigate infection

  7. ACTIVITIES OF SWAPOL FOR PROMOTION OF FOOD SECURITY

  8. 1.Crop Production • 11 hectors of land has been secured where a variety of crops are grown: • Groundnuts • Beans • Maize • Jugo Beans

  9. 2.Community Garden • This initiative is supporting people living with HIV/AIDS to grow vegetables at community level for their consumption and also to sell to earn a living as most of PLWHAS are not working they are living below the poverty line

  10. 3.Backyard Gardens • Backyard gardens are meant for Terminally ill patients and Orphans and Vulnerable children to get nutritious food at household level

  11. 4. Seedling Production • The project is focusing on the production of seedlings ready for planting. The seedlings are supplied to support groups of PLWHAS and sold to farmers at community level. Variety of seedlings are being produced this includes; onions, tomatoes, spinach, beetroot, cabbages etc.

  12. 5.Neighborhood Care Point (NCP) • This is where the Orphans and Vulnerable Children access food and informal education and games

  13. Challenges • Inadequate funding for Food Security • There is more demand of Food Security to the Support Groups of People Living with HIV/AIDS
