  1. Espanol 1010

  2. Terminology • Infinitive: the verb in its original state example: ser, bailar, beber, tomar • Conjugate: changing the verb to match the tense (past, present, future) and subject example: yo soy

  3. Regular –Ar Verbs - Like ser (and all Spanish verbs), -ar verbs have the same subject pronouns -yo -tú -él ella Ud. -nosotros -ellos ellas Uds.

  4. Conjugating the Verbs • To conjugate a verb you must first identify the subject (noun or pronoun) and the tense. This will help you to understand which ending to use. • For present tense take the infinitive and drop it’s ending (–ar etc.) We will change the ending to match the subject

  5. Example • To conjugate any regular –ar verb (present tense) it will follow this pattern • Drop the –ar ending and add ___ to conjugate the verb Bailar: to dance Yo Bailo Tú Bailas Él/Ella/Ud. Baila Nosotros Bailamos Ellos/Ellas/Uds. Bailan

  6. Translation Marisol baila con Juancan mean • Marisol dances with Juan • Marisol is dancing with Juan • Marisol does dance with Juan

  7. Practice • Conjugate these regular –ar verbs into present tense: • Cantar (to sing) • Hablar (to speak) • Esperar (to wait)

  8. Cantar: to sing • Yo canto • Tú cantas • Él/ella/Ud. canta • Nosotros cantamos • Ellos/Ellas/Uds. cantan

  9. Hablar: To Talk, To Speak • Yo hablo • Tú hablas • Él/ella/Ud. habla • Nosotros hablamos • Ellos/Ellas/Uds. hablan

  10. Esperar: to wait (for), to hope • Yo espero • Tú esperas • Él/ella/Ud. espera • Nosotros esperamos • Ellos/Ellas/Uds. esperan

  11. Two Verbs • What happens when there are two verbs? • Example: I want to swim today • The first verb gets conjugated while the second remains in the infinitive • Yo quieronadar hoy. • How would you say: • We need to practice. • I desire to buy a backpack and a map.

  12. Respuestas Necesitamos practicar. • We need to practice. Deseo comprar una mochila y un mapa. • I desire to buy a backpack and a map.

  13. Negativo • To make a sentence negative, we add “no” before the conjugated verb • Pedro no dibuja los monos • Pedro doesn’t draw monkeys • Mateo y Manuela no necesitan clases del arte • Mateo and Manuela do not need art classes

  14. Note *Once conjugated, verbs do not need the subject pronoun to clarify the speaker. We will know that any verb that ends in –o refers to yo. * The pronoun may be used for clarification or emphasis.

  15. Preguntas • Who are the subjects of these? • Bailamos cada noche. • ¿Tomas leche? • Escuchan a la disco de Axel Fernando

  16. Forming Questions • There are a few ways to form questions in Spanish 1.) Raising the pitch of your voice at the end 2.) Putting the subject after the verb or end of sentence 3.) Adding “no” or “verdad” at the end of a sentence

  17. Examples • Instead of saying él canta cada día(he dances every day), change the order of the sentence to ask if he dances everyday. • ¿canta él cada día? • How would you ask these questions - Does she speak Spanish? - Do they need notebooks?
