  1. Can stem cell treatments cure arthritis?

  2. In our day to day lives, we see some people who live an active life even if they have become old. • On the same side, we see some young sportspersons who have to leave behind the sports they love only due to their joint problems. • Why is that so? What leads them to this stage? It is because they have to deal with arthritis. • There is a cushion between your joints which protects your bones to rub against each other and hence prevents inflammation and swelling (which leads to arthritis).

  3. Due to heavy wear and tear, injuries due to accidents, etc. • The cartilage tissue starts deteriorating and the friction between the bones starts increasing which leads to arthritis. • This may be very painful. • The question is, why you need stem cell treatment for this? • The answer is, the cartilage has limited ability to heal or regenerate on its own. • If it is left to heal on its own, we might suffer for a longer period of time. • This is the stage where stem cells come in to the picture.

  4. Stem cells are primarily undifferentiated cells which are then guided to become those cells of the body which are required at some specific part of the body. • Cartilage is the area where stem cells are not normally present in abundance and hence it regrows at a slow pace which is not what one requires when he or she has a damaged cartilage, right? Stem cell treatments can help boost the healing process of the tissues at the site of damage.

  5. Cure is not a correct word but yes, a lot of positives are associated with stem cells as a lot of research is going on world-wide to prove the efficacy of the stem cells in treating arthritis. • Also, talking about the risks involved in stem cell treatment, there is no risk involved in using adult stem cells as these are extracted from your own body and hence there is no risk of rejection as well.
