Basic Facts Population: 38,576,000 Capital City: Warsaw (1.6 million) Official Currency: Zloty Main Religion: Catholic Major Rivers: The Oder, Vistula, and Warta The Baltic Sea borders Poland to the north and is plentiful with sandy beaches and dunes. The northern regions are somewhat hilly and flat. Lakelands are found in the northeastern part of the country. Moving south the lands becomes hilly and mountainous. Our Lady of Czestochowa • Painted on a cedar board by St. Luke the Evangelist. • According to tradition St. Luke took the board from a table from Joseph and Mary’s house in Nazareth. • This and the fact that St. Luke is said to have painted Our Lady and the Child from life, makes the picture a holy relic surrounded by the greatest devotion. • Every morning as the sun rises trumpets sound to announce that the Madonna is being uncovered for the world to see. • The Madonna and Child were originally white, but the old varnish darkened with age and with the help from all the soot from the thousands of devotional candles. During the wars in Rus, Prince Ladislaus of Opole found the painting in the castle at Bełz and discovered it was being venerated as if it were miraculous. • After the Russian victory over the Tatars, he brought the painting to Czestochowa, entrusting it to Pauline Monks for safekeeping. http://encyclopedia.thefreedictionary.com/

During the early part of the 17th century, the monastery and church were fortified because of all the religious wars/persecutions going on at the time. • In 1655 Swedes invaded Poland. • Thousands of Swedes fighting hundreds of Poles.
