The Black Madonna http://library.thinkquest.org/J001272F/history/polish.htm
Our Lady of Czestochowa • Painted on a cedar board by St. Luke the Evangelist. • According to tradition St. Luke took the board from a table from Joseph and Mary’s house in Nazareth. • This and the fact that St. Luke is said to have painted Our Lady and the Child from life, makes the picture a holy relic surrounded by the greatest devotion. • Every morning as the sun rises trumpets sound to announce that the Madonna is being uncovered for the world to see. • The Madonna and Child were originally white, but the old varnish darkened with age and with the help from all the soot from the thousands of devotional candles. This is how the painting became know as The "Black" Madonna. http://users.aol.com/jjnowicki/pollady.htm
http://world.std.com/~stlukes/stluke.html The Black Madonna in Poland is said to be 1 of 3 or 4 remaining paintings of the 7 original paintings that St. Luke painted of the Virgin Mary.

During the wars in Rus, Prince Ladislaus of Opole found the painting in the castle at Bełz and discovered it was being venerated as if it were miraculous. • After the Russian victory over the Tatars, he brought the painting to Czestochowa, entrusting it to Pauline Monks for safekeeping. http://encyclopedia.thefreedictionary.com/
In 1430 thieves tried to steal the painting • Got frustrated with the painting because it was too heavy and started slashing the painting. • Tradition says that as they did this the Madonna started to bleed. • Frustrated and scared the thieves took off. • The painting was repaired, but not completely restored. • Restorers could not fix the three marks left on her face, so instead they traced them to mark the barbarism of the robbers. http://www.peopleteams.org/czestochowa/images/queenmadonna.jpg http://www.gopoland.com/wheretogo/czestochowa/jasnagora/
During the early part of the 17th century, the monastery and church were fortified because of all the religious wars/persecutions going on at the time. • In 1655 Swedes invaded Poland. • Thousands of Swedes fighting hundreds of Poles. Swedes fail. • Black Madonna was kept in safe-keeping, but Poles attribute this miracle to her spiritual presence • Today the Black Madonna attracts over 5 million people world wide to Czestochowa. http://www.jasnagora.pl/english/ http://www.gopoland.com/wheretogo/czestochowa/jasnagora/
