  1. June 9, 2017 If you loved playing outdoors as a child, there’s no doubt you encountered a cricket or two. Found among tall grasses, old logs, and many other natural structures, crickets today are bred to serve many interesting purposes. Of course, these critters are popular as food for reptile pets, but did you know that crickets have many uses as well? Curious? Perhaps one of the following purposes can be your new hobby. 1

  2. Crickets as Your Pet Reptile’s Diet Exactly what kind of reptiles enjoy eating crickets? Try bearded insectivores, spiders, medium- to large-size frogs, and tortoises. Insectivores, such as bearded dragons, lizards, and iguanas, love crickets the most. To maximize your crickets' nutrient value, choose “gut-loaded” crickets, fed on high-quality food. Pet spiders, including tarantulas and wolf spiders, also enjoy crickets. Their feeding time is about once or twice a week, so, you don’t need a lot of crickets at hand. As for pet tortoises, however, commercial pet food is recommended, along with protein sources such as crickets, which can account for 5% of their total food intake. Crickets as Live Bait in Fishing Not a lot of fishing baits can compete with crickets as a fish catcher. Indeed, crickets and worms are two of the most popular live baits used. Crickets are especially good for catching bluegills, while worms lure red-ear sunfish or shell crackers. Buy a cricket bucket or a tube cage if your regularly use crickets as bait. You can then carry more crickets and keep them alive longer. You just need to open the top and snatch one. These portable containers can even be attached to your belt. Crickets as Chicken Feed Besides chickens, other poultry livestock—including quail and turkey—benefit from crickets. Crickets, alive or dried, provide essential proteins for these animals. You can dry your own crickets via a few methods: place them under the sun for a few hours, store them in the freezer, bake them in the oven, or process them with a food dehydrator. As a general rule, don’t use crickets found in your garden or yard because of possible exposure to pesticides and other harmful chemicals. The protein in crickets may one day vault them ahead of soy as the most common ingredient in poultry feed. For one, crickets are more efficient to grow when compared to soy. Less water and space is required compared to soy. 2

  3. To minimize hassles and guarantee the quality of the insect, buy your crickets online from a trusted, experienced seller. These sellers know the nutritional needs of crickets to ensure a fat, healthy insect upon arrival. After all, dead, skinny crickets serve little use to any person or animal.
