  1. The 2 Leading Causes  of Direct Fit  Catalytic Converter  Failure

  2. In order to protect their environment, various countries across the In order to protect their environment, various countries across the  world have enacted laws requiring owners of motor vehicles to fit  them with catalytic converter. Without it, your vehicle is likely to  pollute the environment. In addition to converting harmful gases  to forms which are safe to the environment, a direct fit catalytic  converter also does a good job for your engine.  The leading causes of cat converter failure: The leading causes of cat converter failure: Catalytic poisoning and clogging are the two major factors which may  cause the direct fit catalytic converter to fail. Road damage and fracture  of the unit may also cause it to fail.

  3. Clogging: Clogging: Clogging is mostly caused by melting ceramics. The exhaust system  of your car handles very hot gases which may cause heating up the  cat converter. When there is rich mix of air and fuel, the unburned  fuel may pass through exhaust system. If any fuel gets past the  combustion chamber unburned and enters the exhaust system, it  may ignite upon reaching the catalytic converter. If the unit is  heated beyond its maximum operating temperature, there may be  total  or  partial  meltdown  especially  if  the  catalyst  is  made  of  ceramic. In addition to the mixing of air and fuel, malfunctioning  check  valve,  faulty  fuel  injector,  sticking  float,  faulty  oxygen  sensor, corroded spark wires or plugs and incorrect timing.  Carbon  deposits  can  also  cause  clogging  of  the  car  exhaust  system.  In  some  cases,  through  various  leaks,  antifreeze  may  get  in  to  the  car  exhaust  system.  When this happens, there may be ignition of the invasive chemicals  leaving sooty residue which may cause blockage of normal flow of  gases. The blockage causes backpressure increase and there may be  backing  up  of  the  heat  and  exhaust  in  to  the  vehicle  engine  compartment. This will cause overheated engine components and  loss of power.

  4. Catalytic poisoning: Catalytic poisoning: Catalytic poisoning can happen when the chemicals that cause  clogging  get  in  your  car’s  direct fit catalytic converter.  The  interaction between these chemicals and the catalyst chemicals  may cause change of the latter. This change will mean the cat  converter can no longer convert the harmful exhaust gases into  harmless nitrogen gas, water vapour and carbon dioxide.
