Vikes Athletics (Varsity) One of the most successful university athletic programs in Canada • 16 Teams in 8 different sports • Basketball, Cross Country/Track, Field Hockey, Golf, Rowing, Rugby, Soccer, Swimming • 326 Varsity Student-Athletes from across campus (not including novice and developmental athletes) • 11 full-time and 20 part-time coaches • 64 national championship titles
Tradition of Champions • 45 CIS National Champions • 19 Canadian Univ. Championships • 247 Championship Medals • 156 Olympians • 60 Medals won at Olympics
Our Student-Athletes • 60 Vikes’ athletes received Academic All-Canadian status for 2008-09 and were recognized at the Academic All-Canadian Luncheon • Of the 326, 2009-10 varsity roster: - 240 are from BC; - 81 are from other provinces; and - 5 are from out of the country • Of the 240 from BC: - 79 are from Victoria; - 39 from Vancouver Island; - 81 from the Lower Mainland; and - 41 are from other parts of BC

Vikes Recreation • Committed to providing a wide variety of programs and services to engage students and staff to live a healthy, active life through: • One of the largest fitness weight centres in Western Canada • Convenient aquafit and fitness classes • Various informal recreation (drop-in) opportunities • Play sports without getting “cut” in a competitive and social intramurals program • Classes including yoga, martial arts, tennis and dance • Student-led sports and recreation clubs • Great special events
Recreation by the Numbers • Over a half million facility visits annually • 7,000 students in Intramurals across 323 teams • 2,000 students across 26 Sport Clubs • 2,000+ across 60 Instructional courses

Vikes Recreation cont’d Intramurals • 19 different activities offering 43 leagues from recreational to competitive • Tournaments including Dodge ball, Basketball, Tennis, Soccer, Volleyball and Sand Volleyball • Participation ladders in Squash, Racquetball, Tennis, Table Tennis and Badminton • Focus on social interaction and staying active

Student Employment Student leadership opportunities(club captains, intramurals, varsity) Vikes Recreation • 300+ part-time student staff (summer camps, equipment desk attendants, field attendants, officials, intramural supervisors, etc) • $500,000 annually distributed in student wages Vikes Athletics • 50 students are employed through work study programs • $54,000 annually distributed in student wages

New Facility Project • UVic students are above-average users of recreation facilities • In 2007, UVic conducted a Comprehensive Facility Assessment • Two phased project proposed • Phase 1 – new Athletic and Recreation and CanAssist facility ($58.7 Million) • Phase 2 – renovation to existing McKinnon building and new 50 meter aquatic facility • Student Consultation Process
