  4. Reasons for Homeschooling • As numerous as homeschoolers themselves • 2/3 have some religious reasons • Learning styles or needs • Educational philosophy • Alternative lifestyles • More family time • Travel time to school

  6. Be Aware That Many Homeschoolers… • Do not pay attention to grade level • Vary from the norm—often asynchronous skills • Are very sensitive to being judged (parents especially) • Some are nervous about any government interest in what they are doing • Will be your greatest advocate!

  10. Publicity • Word of mouth • Find a parent volunteer contact • Work with local homeschoolers to develop programs • Find out about local groups—send leader a copy of all publicity • Grocery coops, natural food stores, other grocery stores • Churches • IN the library, on your website

Possible Services to Provide • Longer loan periods “educator cards” • Historical fiction database, etc. • Lists of trade books from popular curriculums (find out what is popular in your area, for example Sonlight) • Pathfinders, lists of resources, websites • Information about WI law, local groups, catalogs

  12. Programs • Work with local homeschooling groups to find out what they are looking for and develop programs • Regular programming works for most—just not so grade-centered • Ask your contacts for advice, read your audience • Badgerlink, other research • Curriculum and book swap

Collections • Home schooling books and magazines • WPA Handbook • Classics, vintage collection? • Educational kits (math, science especially) • Educational videos and unabridged audiobooks very popular usually • Binder with state law information, local homeschool groups, local school curriculum information

  14. Referrals • University of Wisconsin campuses with Instructional Materials Centers: Interlibrary Loan OR Community Cards • Check with the closest university to see what is possible.
