  6. What is Desktop Publishing • Desktop publishing is the use of the computer and specialized software to create documents for desktop or commercial printing. Source • Before this, publishing was completed with large phototypesetting machines and/or free-hand.

  7. What can you produce? • Newsletters • Advertisements • Brochures • Calendars • Business Cards • Labels • Websites

  8. Basics Steps to Produce a Document • Plan the document. • Select a design. • Insert text. • Insert graphics. • Prepare the document for publication. • Print the document.

  9. Plan a Publication • The first step in preparing a Desktop Publication is to plan the basic format of your document. • Create a mock-up • Rough draft of your future publication • Should be paper/pencil, not a template on a computer

  10. Create a New File • Using a template • Default settings

  11. Save, Close, and Reopen a Document • Save vs. Save As • Open

  12. Change the Document View • Toolbars • Title Bar • Menu Bar • Task Pane • Ruler • Vertical Toolbars • Ctrl + Scroll Bar

  13. Add and Edit Text • Text can be added with a Text Box • Insert>Text Box • This is the same as in PowerPoint • Editing text is similar to editing word text • Undo (CTRL + Z) and Redo (CTRL + Y)

  14. Save Changes to a File • File>Save • Save vs. Save As

  15. Insert a Picture • Insert>Picture • From file • Clip Art • Blank Picture

Pegasus and PuTTy • PuTTY will be used to setup your Pegasus Homepage • Download and run PuTTY • Hostname: pegasus.cc.ucf.edu •  Select the SSH Option button •  Click Open • Use your Pegasus ID to login (your NID) and your correct password • Your password will not show up and *’s will not appear when you are typing • At the Pegasus% prompt, type “homepagesetup” and press Enter.

  20. What does homepagesetup do? • In essence, it sets up your Pegasus account to allow a website to be posted to your account. • http://pegasus.cc.ucf.edu/~YourNID • You will see a dummy website if you have not uploaded anything for another class.

  21. What if you do not remember your password? • Try to use the utility at the Pegasus Webmail homepage. • Go to an ACS Campus lab (Classroom 1, CC2 labs) or the Pegasus helpdesk.
